Have lost my spare key fob (car)

I have turned the house upside down looking for it and just can’t find it. I did have a bit of a clear out recently and I’m wondering if I could have thrown it away without realising. The dealer has quoted £500 (including VAT) for replacement and programming 😭

Has anyone else lost one and just driving round without a spare? Or did you bite the bullet and pay? I don’t think there’s any way around there?

Both! we lost our spare for our old car (still a newish expensive car) but we never replaced that one and part-ex'd it with one.

New car, we replaced, friend works at the dealers so only charged for the key and not reprogramming, was still quite expensive but not as bad as the first.

Thanks for coming back to me. I have spent the past half hour googling auto locksmiths and they seem to be falling over themselves to come out and do it straight away for less than half the price. So I might just risk it. I do have form for putting things down and not knowing where I put them but if it was say just a few minutes previously then I've always managed to find them 🤞🏻

Yeah, for our old car none of them seemed to be able to do it except the main dealer. I suspect they would all be able to do the new car but didn’t need to ask with knowing our friend.

My biggest worry was whether it was technically insured with a spare key floating round in an unknown location. And if the car was stolen we wouldn’t be able to give the insurance both keys.

We did take key cover for the next couple of years on the insurance after the first time but then stopped again for some unknown reason.

Do you have breakdown cover? I have key replacement with mine AA. It's worth getting as I did have to use it a few years ago when I lost my spare. I think the replacement was free, or certainly very low cost.

I've managed with one key for the last three years. It does give me anxiety though

We lost ours years ago (just before COVID!!!!!!). We've managed with one. They are ridiculously expensive to replace.

We had our kitchen redone earlier in the year and thought it might reappear then. But it didn't, Goodness knows where it went.

I’ve had no spare for a few years now, Apple tag on existing one has helped provide some reassurance I won’t be left stuck!!

If only one person drives the car I wouldn’t bother. So now if I lost a key I wouldn’t replace as DH can’t drive anymore. Years ago though we would have needed the second key as often collected/dropped the car from each others work before or after doing the school run.
