Food ideas when I don't get a lunch break

I've just shortened my hours at work to 9.30 - 2.30 and therefore don't get a lunch break. I can still eat at my desk but needs to be more discreet food so not like soup or something that has to be cooked/microwaved. Any ideas of healthy snacks to get me through these hours? Will be taking fruit

Assuming you have breakfast before going to work, can't you manage with fruit until you get back home? 5 hours isn't long to go without lunch

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 10/09/2025 12:55

Fruit and nut mix. Protein bar.

Newsnow · 10/09/2025 12:56

I would eat a breakfast bar.

sandwich, yogurt, crisps, crudites, snack bars, fruit

JustStopItNora · 10/09/2025 12:57

I would have a ham and salad wrap. Easy to eat with one hand.

You can't sit at your desk for 5 hours OP. I thought workers were legally entitled to a 20 minute break after 4 hours. Am I misremembering? That's plenty time to heat/eat some soup.

sunshinedaises · 10/09/2025 13:05

@DoWhatYouLikeOrShutUp I don't think so. I'd have breakfast but travel is 30 minutes each way so that's another hour I lose. I'm an eat little and often type

@MouldyCandy it's 20 minutes if you work 6 hours or more, I did just check as well

20 minutes if you work over 6 hours.

Hoolahoophop · 10/09/2025 13:06

@MouldyCandy its 20 minutes in 6 hours.

People eating anything that looks like a meal at their desk are very much frowned on by the rest of the team at our place. Our lunch break is unpaid so eating lunch while 'working' is seen as taking the piss.

joanofaardvark · 10/09/2025 13:08

Protein shake will help keep you feeling full but not look like food.

WonderingWanda · 10/09/2025 13:09

Baby bel an apple and some oatcakes to nibble.
Banana and raisins.
Cup a soup

slug · 10/09/2025 13:10

I take a couple of small boxes. One with small fruit, cherries, raspberries, whatever's on reduced to clear etc. One usually has small pieces of peppers, cherry tomatoes (which I grow) and some protein. Today is cooked chicken breast but often it's either some nuts or a few slices of salami. The trick is nothing smelly and nothing that gives you grubby fingers.

Ohthatsabitshit · 10/09/2025 13:12

Surely soup in a cup is ideal. Stick it in the microwave and sip it like coffee?

Biblio4 · 10/09/2025 13:14

I would take cashew nuts, dried fruit and drink a glass of milk.

GAJLY · 10/09/2025 13:20

I only work a few hours so don't qualify for a lunch break. I bring a salad sandwich, breakfast bar, banana and a stanley cup filled with warm water. When the weather gets colder, I'm going to bring my food flask filled with a hot beef stew.

24Dogcuddler · 10/09/2025 13:24

I second a protein shake, banana, trail mix.

wwyd2021medicine · 10/09/2025 13:27

Protein shakes
Many don't need refrigeration either so great to keep in the car

Blarn · 10/09/2025 13:27

I used to do 8:30 to 2:30 and got used to a small snack or something very quick to eat like a ham roll which I could eat in two minutes while taking a break from my desk.

incognitomouse · 10/09/2025 13:30

On days I know I will struggle to get a break, I take a protein shake and a piece of fruit. Gets me through!

RB68 · 10/09/2025 13:42

I would take a snack around 11 and 1,30 - but would use apple and nuts and or bit of cheese. Just be careful of surrounding nut allergies.

smoothy wont last too long in terms of satiating you but a protein bar or similar would also be a good shout.

Plenty of water will help too

starfishmummy · 10/09/2025 14:00

If you have a lidded insulated reusable coffee mug thing, you could put soup in it and no one would know.
