How did you find your job?

I’d like to leave my current job/career that I’ve done since I was 18, so nearly 20 years now. I stayed because it was convenient around my children and initially post Covid there was some flexibility to work from home so I stayed a bit longer. The flexibility has now all gone and that was my reason to stay.

Where do you look for new jobs? Ideally like everyone else I’d like the option to work remotely some of the time but I have no qualifications post a-levels and can’t see why anyone would choose to employ me. One of my children has some medical needs so I need to be able to do both school runs.

So if you have a flexible job that you enjoy and allows some remote working, where did you find it?

I was made redundant last August so job searched on Indeed and Total Jobs, and googled marketing jobs in hometown. That gave me a list of about 30 jobs to apply for over 6 weeks. Seven interviews, three second interviews and a lovely job offer from my current employer.

I'm 62 and thought it would be horrendously difficult, but was pleasantly surprised. Instead I have a 10 minute rural commute and can wfh one day a week.

You have years of experience, are loyal, don't job hop and take your work seriously. Competent, reliable staff with good skills are hard to come by so don't undervalue yourself.

Go to a few interviews even if you aren't that interested in the job, and don't expect to get the first one. Interviewing is a skill and I find it takes one or two interviews to brush up my responses. Good luck.
