To a kind person at John Lewis….

A while ago I stupidly rushed out just before the store closing time to return a green John Lewis parcel with a QR code. Only a few days later did I realise that I had actually taken the wrong green parcel, and had instead sent them a just-recieved bag of M&S tights and underwear that I’d bought for the winter. 😩

It was quite a big M&S order costing about £80, but I was resigned to the fact that there wasn’t going to be any feasible way of retrieving it from the John Lewis postal returns depot, wherever it is, and that that was £80 down the tubes because of my daft mistake.

Imagine then to my surprise, that just a few days ago I got a returns notice from M&S…Someone kind at John Lewis has gone to the trouble of filling out the returns slip, packaging it all back up, and posting it off to M&S just so that I got my £80 back.

I don’t suppose there’s any way of getting in touch with that kind person, but on the off chance they read MN, thank you for a lovely kind thing you did for me! I’m really touched and relieved not to have lost that money; and more than that, it was a lovely surprise to know that kind people are still out there. I’ll pay it forward!

Ah that's lovely. I'm so glad for you!

SkaneTos · 08/09/2025 22:43

I don't really understand what happened, but I'm glad it all worked out!
Kind people are so lovely!

Op that's lovely that someone at JL took the time to return them to M&S for you.

Does make me wonder how often does it happen that people return the wrong stuff to the wrong chain.

That's so nice. I'd imagine it's not the first or the last time they've had to do it though!

SummerFrog25 · 08/09/2025 22:51

Oh that's heart warming. How lovely of them 😊

AdaColeman · 08/09/2025 22:56

That's a really kind gesture from John Lewis. Maybe you could email their Customer Service with a thank you message!

Lifelong JL customer and former JL customer facing partner.
What a lovely post, expect nothing less from JL.
Let me know branch and will find JL partner for you, I'm sure it'll make their day.
I still work in customer service elsewhere , posts like this warm my heart.

That’s lovely. How did it work out with your John Lewis return? Have you been able to return your green jumper?

I still had the John Lewis return items at home, so they let me return in store when I explained what had happened. Not a green jumper sadly but school uniform!

I love this, OP! Well done to the JL staff member.

This is such a nice thing to read.

A few years ago, my mum ordered a tumble dryer from JL. Except she somehow ordered 2 tumble dryers. Someone from JL called to check if she meant to order 2, and refunded her right away when she confirmed it was a mistake. We always buy what we can from JL because the customer service is brilliant.

I love JL. I once went to splurge on an expensive dress there because it just made me feel so beautiful. The lady at the till noticed a tiny stitch barely sticking out of the seam that I hadn’t noticed, promptly gave me 15% off, a wink, and a £5 voucher because it was Christmas.

Lovely woman.

I haven’t had an M&S returns slip in my parcel for years. Are you not in England, or was it a really long time ago?

She never actually opened the M&S parcel she accidentally gave it to JL.
However they did it, details on the bag or whatever, someone at JL returned the parcel to M&S who in turn refunded the Op.

Yes this!

Yes now they do returns by code, so I don’t know how they managed it if there was no return slip: maybe they just sent it back to sender or something? I only got an email acknowledgment of the return and all the items having been sent back, so it must have made its way back to them somehow!

There'll have been a customer/order no. on the label, I'm guessing.

Yeah in our store you just drop it through a hole in the wall in the original bag and it happens by magic

TheGodsOfTheCopybookHeadings · 09/09/2025 09:15

In fact the JL rep may just have posted the parcel on to M&S without opening it. However that's still a very nice thing to do.

**Other way round! 🙂

TheGodsOfTheCopybookHeadings · 09/09/2025 09:19

I'm still very grumpy that I can't buy from either of these stores anymore. Big black Xs in my Big Book of Boycotts...but I don't hold that against the people down on the floor doing the hard work! 💐

A staff member at John Lewis pretty much saved my sanity the other day. I had a pretty short window to buy something for my dad’s funeral. I’d tried some stuff on but was going back for a second round as nothing was quite right. I had about 5 pairs of trousers, couple of long dresses, tops. I was getting in a right mess. The lovely lady who was on personal shopping (I wasn’t using that service) gathered the whole lot up, took it into the personal shopping changing area and let me have as much time as I needed to try it all. Absolutely angel at exactly the right time.
