Tartan at Gretna green!?!

I'm English, as is my Partner. For background my grandmother was scottish. We're getting married next year at Gretna green, I did wonder if a tartan sash would be completely a no go and frowned upon - I bloody love tartan!

Why would it be? We are thinking about a Gretna green wedding.

probablyadaftquestion · 08/09/2025 16:43

ohh @Slinkyminky22 which venue are you looking at?

I’m Scottish. I can’t think of any reason it would be frowned upon, go for it!

IHaveRunOutOfIdeas · 08/09/2025 16:49

I had a Gretna wedding in 2023. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

We did the Coach House and then Smiths, we had a bagpiper and horse and carriage both booked separately as it was slightly cheaper.

TalulahJP · 08/09/2025 16:52

Why not! You have Scottish roots. Be nice to use the appropriate tartan.

MidLifeMayhem · 08/09/2025 16:54

My sister had a white wedding dress with a tartan wrap - it was an October wedding and looked great. My friend had a white dress with a tartan sash round the waist came together at the back and flowed down - beautiful. So definitely go for it.

oh this thread has made me smile! We're getting married in October too. I'm also a redhead so the colours work really well for autumn as a very shallow consideration!

What venue do you have?

user1471523071 · 08/09/2025 18:09

You have a scottish grandmother so of course you can wear tartan in whatever form. Our current Scotland rugby captain is only eligible because of his scottish granny and everyone loves him!

ThreePears · 08/09/2025 18:17

Have you researched your grandmother's family name or clan tartan, if there is one? Perhaps you could wear that.

I've found mine and it as dull as ditchwater

CeciliaDuckiePond · 08/09/2025 18:25

There's tartan everywhere you look in the tourist bit of Gretna Green so you will fit right in.

probablyadaftquestion · 08/09/2025 18:52

@IHaveRunOutOfIdeasthe original blacksmiths shop.

yes @ThreePears there is one, luckily it’s lovely!
