Gaza conflict history

I am going to sound completely ignorant but I only really studied 20th century European history. And never did history GCSE. I would like to understand the history of the war in Gaza but I struggle to read backgrounds on it as I don't really understand differences and relationships between Israel, Gaza, Palestine, Arabic and Jewish groups. For example is Israel the whole country (is it a country?) where its all going on?

Basically I need maps showing the whole history over time as I am a visual thinker. If I'm reading about X and x, if I can't visualise it, it doesn't work, as the next sentence relies on me to hold in my working memory what they said about the last group. I have ADHD so that's impossible, I don't have a working memory. It's especially hard if I have no previous knowledge of what I'm learning.

I'm then stuck on but what do you mean? Invariably they miss out stuff and make leaps between things so I'm left with more questions about what's missing and none the wiser. I can cope with ambiguity but I'd rather it just said yeah that part was controversial because of this but we sorted of ended up with this.

I sort of need to immerse myself in a book with a lot of pictures, or work through a book and draw myself a map alongside it. But never have time for that so just have no idea what's going on.

Anyone point me in the direction of info?

Can’t help, but it’s so complicated and I’ve read books, pored over maps and discussed with brainiacs - good luck xx

If I need to grasp the basics of something, I often find children's resources can be a brilliant starting point!

This is a very informative resource and has links to many maps and other visual resources within:

Hardly an unbiased source.

I didn't get the impression that the OP was looking for resources on Nakba denial - that's an extreme and dark viewpoint to hold.

Oh yes forgot to say, unbiased sources welcome. I just don't know where to start so anything basic really. Maybe I will try Wikipedia.

And the only alternative to that is using sources such as Mondoweiss and Electronic Intifada for an "educational resource" about what the evil 'zionists' did from an organisation that attempted to excuse October 7th?

I’ve learnt a lot by following a variety of intelligent, knowledgeable people on X, who discuss the history of the region in depth. But there is A LOT of misinformation and propaganda so it takes a while (and good comprehension skills) to feel confident and even fairly well-informed.

ChatGPT will give you a timeline and specific wars etc
