Help! My smoke alarm is beeping on and off

Due to a low battery and can’t figure out how to get to the battery compartment! I’ve tried twisting it off but it says to disconnect the AC mains and that the battery is not replaceable? Worried it’s going to keep going off in the night now as I have an ASD child who would be very distressed at the noise. Help!

Mine is a mains wired one and you need to stick a knife in near the top. And it sort of pushes something.

Mine slides sideways.
Took me bloody ages to figure out 😕

Also have you pressed the reset button?

Put a screwdriver in the small rectangular hole between the base and the unit and ease it off gently.

Is it a Aico Ei3016 Mains Interlinked Optical Smoke Alarm?

I have these ones in my new build house. They're hardwired in and not battery operated. No idea how to get them off though unfortunately

Have your electrics tripped? Maybe check the fuse box and/or reset the mains?

Ahh ok. Mine is a new build too. I don’t want to risk yanking it off!

You are only removing part of it. You will need an electrician to change it.

Have a look at the fuse box, it should be labelled. But don’t turn them off without having some others at backup.

Some of them you need to replace the whole unit you can't change batteries.

PashaMinaMio · 03/09/2025 21:09

Mine was like yours OP.
It was hard wired but beeping.
lasted 26 years but had to be replaced last year.
Had to get an electrician in to do it.
Safety is priceless. Get it done.

workingcocker · 03/09/2025 21:12

Has it expired?

Nearly50omg · 03/09/2025 21:12

Smack it with a broom is what I usually do 😂

You will need an electrician to replace the head unit. It’s likely they have all expired so would be worth doing them all at the same time.

Letstheriveranswer · 03/09/2025 21:16

The mains ones have a back up battery, sounds like the battery has expired. There should be a button to press to stop it beeping until you can replace the whole unit. If you get the same type it should have the same connectors that clip into each other, just isolate the smoke alarm switch at your fusebox /circuit board when you change them.

JoshLymanSwagger · 03/09/2025 21:17

When one of ours went off (and why the hell is it always in the middle of the night) we managed to shut it up, then vacuumed it. It's been fine since.
