If you have a commute how long is it?

Sort of out of nosiness but also wondering if I’m stopping myself from changing careers because I don’t want to risk my work/life balance.

My current commute is about 25-30 minutes in the car but each way. Once the schools go back it will be more like 45-50 minutes each way.
i go to the office 2/3 times a week.
There is a role I’m curious about at head office which would require 3 days in the office and would take an hour and a half each way and I’d be at the mercy of the trains.
It’s not a role I’m definitely interested in pursuing but it’s in my area of expertise and I’d find it possibly more stimulating than my current job. Also unlikely to get it based on the fact that I haven’t been doing much in that field for 3 years!
i like my current job and get on well with my team who are brilliant.
I’m reluctant to do anything though that shifts my work/life balance in the wrong direction though; I feel as though I have the perfect set up for me and my family right now and I’m sort of loathe to make big changes: so I just wondering how much of a commute those of you that have one do?
My 2/3 days that I WFH is commute free and I have plenty of time to myself as a result of that. Can capitalise on exercise and running errands when I log off and just being around.
Any thoughts?

No wonder you just go once a week @Buscake - that’s a hell of a journey!
is that via public transport or driving (presumably you’re not cycling all that way!!)?

I do a train commute twice a week that's 90 mins each way. I love it! But can't rely on trains to get me home for an exact time eg school pick up, always need a plan B in case of delays.

TranceNation · 01/09/2025 20:29

Half hour drive but ten mins of that is going through traffic lights for a mile to get out of our town - 11 possible sets of traffic lights.

Buscake · 01/09/2025 22:03

@TheChosenTwo It’s a drive - south coast to London - but it’s even worse by train! Too many changes.

Icanflyhigh · 01/09/2025 22:12

4 minutes door to door, down from my previous commute of 9 minutes door to door.

It's sometimes increased by traffic, but never more than 10 minutes, and if needed I can walk it in 15-20 minutes!

Wouldn't cope with a longer journey to work!

DH & DD both have 30-45 mins drive each way, that's not for me!

Summershutdown · 01/09/2025 22:30

4 mins. I wouldn’t have it any other way!! Before this job it was 15-20 mins!

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 01/09/2025 22:32

10mins in the car or 25 mins by bike. For me anything more than 20mins by car is too long

DopeyMum16 · 01/09/2025 22:33

50-60 minutes - bus and then underground . That is London - very slow !

TheCurious0range · 01/09/2025 22:36

I used to have a commute that was 45 minutes drive plus 15 minute walk on a good day, it would frequently take 2 hours plus in traffic. It was hellish. My base office is now a twenty/twenty five minute walk from my house, under ten minutes by car. I do have to travel to other locations sometimes but I'm on the clock once I've deducted my usual commute time. I'd never go back to a long commute, especially while I have young DC at home and even later on it'd have to be for something I really wanted.

19 minutes door to door, including the tube

New job for me starting tomorrow - 25-30 min drive and that’s the longest I’ve ever had! Been working from home for 5 years (can’t sleep as nerves)

MyLittleSodaPop · 02/09/2025 01:44

7 minutes on average. 5 minutes during school holidays. I used to commute for 60-70 mins each way. Never again.

Good luck Buffy!

1 hour each way. Mixture of bus and walking but includes time spent trying to actually squeeze into a bus as they are mostly packed .

User0311 · 04/04/2026 18:47

10 minutes max each way! Used to commute an hour+ each day. Never again. I earn slightly less now but completely worth the compromise!

1000StrawberryLollies · 04/04/2026 18:49

30 mins each way by car, unless traffic is bad. 5 days a week (no WFH in my job).

WinterNightStars · 04/04/2026 19:17

Car commute 25 mins easy drive, 3 day / week.
DH commute 60-90mins, 2 days / week. WFH other days. It’s a lot but holding out for retirement now.
