I'm an absolute idiot

Only gone and ordered the wrong flooring (lino) AND had it fitted!! I can't believe I have done this when I had SO many opportunities to not make this mistake. £360 practically gone down the drain which is a lot to me. The difference is slight but the more I look at it the more I notice. I am devastated!! It's darker than the one I wanted and to make it worse, I have the correct one in the two bedrooms!! It crossed my mind that I should have brought a sample with me when I went to the shop to confirm my order (I had some of the previously fitted flooring left over) but I trusted that I would recognise it because obviously I had had it in both bedrooms for the past year 🙄 they only had one herringbone when I had the bedrooms done but now they have 2 shades and I didn't fucking realise like the idiot that I am so when he showed me the darker one I said yes. I even questioned the colour when he arrived to fit the flooring and rolled out some of the previous one to compare and stupidly allowed the fitter to convince me it is the same and sometimes there can be a slight difference in the roll or whatever the fuck he said but I obviously accepted the explanation like an idiot!! Once the floor was fitted, I did not immediately notice, it's only after they have left I've rolled out old sample and it's immediately obvious that it's not the same. I am gutted. I don't know what I can do except live with it and hate myself forever. Yeah in the grand scheme of things, things could be worse but I am pretty pissed at myself right now

Don’t give yourself such a hard time. At the weekend I went out with different shades of eyeshadow on my two eyes! In the artificial light it didn’t show, but in the sunshine …

BrentfordForever · 26/08/2025 14:43

OMG in the second picture you posted it’s gorgeous !

darker is better Op, light sofa on that particular “other” light flooring looks washed up!

BauhausOfEliott · 26/08/2025 14:49

You're stressing about nothing. If there's any difference it's barely even discernible to the naked eye. I don't think I'd actually have noticed that it was different if it was in different rooms.

The darker one looks nice

plus, the LAST thing you need is everything in the room to be the same tone of grey.

i saw a Rightmove horror listing once where the whole place was grey to the point that you thought the photos were in black and white.

The dark grey against a lighter grey sofa looks really nice. If you’re really bothered, get a nice rug to warm things up a bit .

That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid! Previous living room was a grey horror. Sofa is actually a natural colour (some silver threading entwined) but does not look grey in person at all, more light beige. Walls are off white with taupe feature wall, the correct floor would have brought it all together so nicely and correct floor had more oak tones coming through in person, this dark grey is horrible

You will stop noticing it after a few days. I'd get your irritation if it was a hall leading into a room, or two different ones in the same kitchen-diner or something, but either side of a hallway, no one is going to notice.

😂 sorry to laugh but thank you for the giggle, I'm sorry that happened to you

Life is weird!

when people ask if it's a line on a pregnancy test, loads says 'yes of course' but I can rarely see it.

yet with your flooring I think there's a big difference.

you told the guy it wasn't the correct one, but he said it was, it's not, go back to the shop!

Sanfrancoco · 26/08/2025 15:00

yogpot · 26/08/2025 14:41

Aww, whilst I think the floor looks fine and no one will else will notice, I totally empathise with that crushing feeling when you’ve made a silly mistake despite the fact you thought you took every care to get it right, especially when it’s something that has cost a fair bit of money. I also self flagellate to a ridiculous degree about small things, get super het up and my internal monologue can get really nasty to myself.

Take a moment, breathe and go for a walk.

Thank you. You hit all nails on the head there. I know it doesn't look bad, but it's not what I wanted and to me doesn't suit the decor I've already done. I am definitely my own worst enemy and need to beat myself up a bit (figuratively) before I can move on. Hoping I can be over it in a few days and it won't niggle at me every time I walk into the living room and see it (as it currently does). I'm just honestly gutted, can't believe I made this mistake when I'm usually so on the ball, didn't trust my instinct even as he was bloody laying it. Walk definitely needed. Thank you for not just saying 'it looks fine/same'

Honestly, I wouldnt even notice that. Even if they were rooms next to each other.

I'm not sure whether the shop will take any responsibility being as I probably chose the darker one in store, but I did not know there was another one as they only had one when I previously ordered the lighter one. Neither were they next to each other in the shop for me to compare. He showed it to me and I said yes because I genuinely thought it was the same. When they delivered and I pointed out the colour discrepancy, I allowed him to convince me it was the same. Surely it's all my fault or I should have insisted it wasn't the same before he fit it? Or do you think I have grounds as he told me it's the same when it's clearly not?

I'd forgotten that part, Yes, OP, if you genuinely can't bear it, take it up with the fitter who claimed it was the same as the other one.

SilenceInside · 26/08/2025 15:10

I doubt they’ll change it for free given they fitted what you ordered, and you simply chose the wrong one. The fitter giving his opinion on the day isn’t a legally binding promise that it was the same as what you already have.

Yeah that's exactly what I think too

I prefer the sofa on the darker flooring. There's a better contrast.

I also think it's nice to have the sitting room having similar, but different, flooring from the bedrooms.

WifeOfAGemini · 26/08/2025 15:16

Looks great! Chill and enjoy life

Whattodo1610 · 26/08/2025 15:19

I much prefer the darker one, and I think it looks much better against your sofa than the lighter one. But I guess no matter how many people prefer it, it probably won’t change your mind about it. I hope you learn to love it ❤️

Movingnextweek · 26/08/2025 15:32

We allowed a fitter to convince us that the LVT tiles he had laid in the kitchen of our last property was correct. In fact he’d messed up the grouting strips, and a few years down the line the whole floor looked rubbish.
We discovered too late that if we’d queried it at the time with the supplier, we might have stood a chance of having the floor relaid.
It might be worth you asking, OP, but don’t beat yourself up. Both shades look great!

WickWood · 26/08/2025 15:40

I honestly think your new flooring looks fab and really suits your sofa, I much prefer it to the other one! I do understand though why you're beating yourself up, id probably be the same. I really do hope you'll learn to love your new flooring, it really does look lovely x

Pic for comparison

I like the one on the left but the other not so much.
Whish did you choose in error?

BetweenTwoFerns · 26/08/2025 15:48

£360 is not down the drain. You are being far too hard on yourself.

The one on the left is what I wanted. One on the right is what I mistakenly chose. There is an updated pic showing flooring against the sofa

Well I understand it’s personal preference but in the photo, I think the sofa looks awful with the lighter floor. Much nicer with the contrast of the darker floor.

I understand it’s annoying to have chosen the wrong one, but honestly if these things matter so much to you, you should have been a lot more careful when ordering. You’ve learnt that now.

Either get over it, or replace it. Stop beating yourself up over something that actually matters very little in the grand scheme of things.

Is it glued in?

Given you can’t get over it, if your remove it could you get a partial refund ?

The shop should have made you aware they now have two very similar when you were in there asking about the Herringbone.

You told the fitter it wasn't the same, he convinced you it was.

it doesn't look the same.

it IS nice you've been able to get some new furnishings etc. but it's not 'lucky' you didn't win them! You worked hard/saved whatever to buy them.

id definitely go back to the shop, speak to them very nicely. But tell them it isn't what you previously bought, they didn't make you aware they now have 2 similar herringbone & you told the fitter it wasn't wrong, but he told you it wasn't. He came up with BS about it just being a different 'batch'. Talk to them. Nicely. I very much doubt they'll replace it completely free, but it might not cost too much & you can sell what you have down now.

It would piss me off massively & I'd need to get the other one put down.
