Retraining into something physical (40s)

Like many of us, I'm about to open my pissing, bastarding, arseing laptop and sit infront of it, bored out of my nut, for the next 8 hours.

I'm early 40s and the older I get, I'm finding it increasingly hellish sitting down and staring at a screen all day. I want to move my body.

I've been to the gym this morning, and will break up the day with a dog walk, but I'm finding office work (whether I'm in the office or wfh) terminable.

Have you, or any other women you know, retrained into a physical job (any kind would be fine and I'm not so bothered about salary these days)?

Early 40s is a weird age. I'm fit as a fiddle, but I feel physical jobs are more geared towards men, and some doors feel closed due to my age.

I've looked into firefighting, which has no upper age limit, but they are never recruiting anywhere near where I live.

Thanks!

Change of plan for me!

I'm feeling SO distressed by being stuck inside, staring at a screen today. I'm in the office and it's SO dead and I'm SO bored, and I think it's starting to come across in my very lethargic interactions with everyone. Ive got a to do list to get through, and I dont give the slightest shit about any of it. I'm reaching that point where I fear I'll just walk out one day, head home and never return!

I've just looked into teaching, but I think I need to do something where I can work for myself and have the flexibility to take it in lots of different directions, and operate on as small or large a scale as I see fit. So I've just submitted an enquiry to do a 12 week personal training course!

As I was looking at the course info, I realised how massively excited it makes me. I love fitness and nutrition and can see myself doing one-on-one coaching, boot camp workouts in the local park, hiring a little unit and doing small group sessions. Who knows - one day rent a big unit and open a ladies only gym, which we don't have anywhere nearby and I know would thrive!

Thanks for the inspiration and good luck with your future plans too!

Thank you for this thread OP! It's very inspiring to hear so many people's escapes from sitting at a desk all day. I'm a similar age and feeling exactly as you describe. I've got a few options I'm thinking about but it's very difficult to make final decisions and take the plunge!
