Can a broken coxxyc be fixed?

At the beginning of May I fell down some stairs, I took the full weight of the fall on my tailbone, bouncing down several steps on my bum. It was incredibly painful. Walking was fine but sitting on any kind of chair was agony, getting up even more so. The pain plateaued at about 4 weeks and since then has remained the same. I am still in a huge amount of pain when sitting, whether it’s a hard or soft chair. At first I presumed my tailbone was badly bruised but after 14 weeks and still so much pain I have to consider it’s broken. I’ve used at home remedies and am going to see a doctor soon, but Dr Google doesn’t fill me with confidence that there’s anything a doctor can do. Has anyone had such an injury and eventually become pain free / healed? What treatment did a doctor offer? Any advice much appreciated.

I broke mine falling off a horse 35 years ago (!). I spent a long time on a ring cushion and my coccyx is frozen at a right angle out from my spine!

It takes around a year to stop hurting continuously. I still get sciatica linked to scar tissue around it (which does ease if I dont horse ride!).

Docs can perform an "ectomy" and remove it. Or they can do steroid injections.

Be aware even though you banged your coccyx it may have made an issue higher up too. An MRI would be advisable.

Good luck!

broke mine years ago.
took a few months to not need a rubber ring to sit on anymore.

Just to reassure you, you aren’t at risk of getting an infection after a normal break (fractures that cause the bone to break through the skin yes). Also a fall down a flight of stairs resulting in a coccyx fracture would not indicate a DEXA scan is necessary.

you could speak to your GP about pain relief if you felt OTC wasn’t helping. there’s not much else that would be necessary at this point - as others point out, it takes an awfully long time for this to settle - sorry!

You can get an infection after a break and depending on age you might well need a DEXA scan. That's why it's important to be properly checked out. I would want a doctor to tell me there is nothing they can do and time will heal and any pain that is getting worse should be checked out.

I broke mine about 15 years ago and it probably took 2 years before I was sitting comfortably in most settings - now I only get twinges after a couple of hours riding a horse - or if I hire a bike with a rubbish saddle. Sorry there isn’t a quick fix

I fell down a set of marble stairs in Greece. I’m pretty certain I broke my coccyx- sitting was uncomfortable for about two years but it did resolve eventually.
