Quiet day trip from London

I work in London in hospitality and the past few weeks have been utter hell for me. I have tomorrow off and would like to escape for the day. Somewhere pretty not too far by train and most importantly not filled with tourists. Does this place exist??

Rochester?

Hatfield House?

Lee Valley boat hire at Broxbourne?

St Albans?

Which side of London - which is your preferred departure station?
Two suggestions from Waterloo: Farnham or Godalming.

Head towards the sea?

Deal? Rye? Frinton? Worthing?

Whistable - can get busy but you can lose the crowds if you walk along the seafront (applies to any seaside town thinking about it).

I can get to most of the major stations very quickly (10-30 mins by bus or tube) so any of them will do.

Leamington Spa from Marylebone? Lots of independent shops, regency architecture, big park, small cafes and restaurants. May be further than you want by train, but it's not a massive journey.

Worthing is a good shout. I went to Deal & Rye not too long ago and they were filled with dancing tiktokers 😂

No that’s doable. I don’t mind if the journey is a bit longer if there aren’t many changes.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Some great options here I haven’t thought of.

Arundel? Great castle.

InTheNotswolds · 24/08/2025 08:20

Winchester. Water meadows and Jane Austen.

Pippatpip · 24/08/2025 08:26

There is an organ recital on in Arundel Cathedral round about lunchtime - think it is donations afterwards - on Bank Hol Monday.

Check the trains as there are major disruptions this weekend

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/08/2025 08:34

I wouldn't go anywhere by train this weekend, huge disruptions.

piscofrisco · 24/08/2025 11:58

St Albans

KateShugakIsALegend · 26/08/2025 11:39

Where did you end up, @cheesemakesmehappy ?

I forgot about the train disruptions until posters mentioned it so decided to stay local-ish just using tubes, buses and my legs! I went to Epping Forest & Walthamstow Wetlands. Then an impromptu dinner with friends - wine and pizza in a park.

How were the wetlands? We had them on the to do list but never got round to it this summer

May still go before it gets too autumnal.

I love the wet lands, great walk to blow away the cobwebs 😊

Lovely! I nearly suggested the Wetlands. Glad you had a good day. Epping Forest is great too.
