What colour are my eyes?

You’d think I’d know this, but I always thought they were hazel, until recently someone said they’re green with brown something I can’t remember the name of. So are they hazel or something else?

Eyes are not a static colour like paint. They reflect light so it’s a bit meaningless to say green or hazel or light brown or grey. It’s all a spectrum. In that photo they’re hazel.

I wouldn't focus too much on the colour, to be honest, I would be more concerned that the one on the left looks quite a bit higher than the other one (on the right). 😉

I would have said brown but out of curiosity I asked ChatGPT and it reckons they’re hazel!

The same as mine, hazel. Brown eyes are brown and green are green, but different colours in the iris are hazel.

That’s the word I was looking for! Someone described them as green with brown heterochromia. My mum has green eyes which look green. My son has the same colour eyes as me, which are two distinct colours, and I’ve always described his as hazel too

Agree. Have you always had a ring of brown round the pupil? When I first met DH he had completely brown eyes but now he has heterochromia with a brown ring round the pupil and the rest green. He had to have regular glaucoma tests for a while until they confirmed the degradation of the pigment in his iris wasn't affecting the pressure in his eye. So if your eye have been darker in the past please speak to an optometrist about getting it monitored.

I think greeny/brown/amber eyes are usually called hazel, as a catch all, as hazel isn't really used as a colour descriptor otherwise.
