How old did she think I am?

Cutringcorners · 22/08/2025 20:42

Conversation with older (50-55 years old) colleague.

The window was open and I said I was cold. She said she was too warm. I expressed surprise. She said “in 20 years you’ll be too warm
too”, obviously referring to menopause.

How old would she think I am?

20 years younger than her I think?

AintNoPunshineWhenShesGone · 22/08/2025 20:45

35 ish?

MolkosTeenageAngst · 22/08/2025 20:46

Peri-menopause can start for some women in their forties and most women have hit menopause by their fifties so I’d say she thinks you’re somewhere between your mid twenties to mid thirties, so 25-35ish.

30 probably.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 22/08/2025 20:48

Early 30s

Cutringcorners · 22/08/2025 21:01

For context I’m 40 and was confused by her comment, because I don’t think I look younger than my age. People normally estimate me 5 years older than I am, and have done for a while. So I think menopause is around the corner and not in 20 years.

Younger than her

I think she was attempting to be very polite and not accidentally over age you

You're overthinking one remark

She knows you’re younger than her, that’s all she meant.

Thebigonesgetaway · 22/08/2025 21:16

Don’t over think it, she was being nice.

Massively overthinking here....she's not trying to work out how long you have till menopause...she just made a passing remark

Yes this. Telling someone they look much younger is only ever intended as a compliment.

Geneticsbunny · 22/08/2025 22:54

25?

TheGoodEnoughWife · 22/08/2025 22:59

She was adding on a few years to make sure she didn’t offend you. Don’t over think it.

FuzzyWolf · 22/08/2025 23:02

I was going to say 40 or below so it sounds like she was right. Most women start the menopause in their early 50s but some will be later. Therefore, assume most have started by the age of 60 and deduct 20 years.

Perhaps she knew that how you look and your age was important to you (hence starting this thread!) so she was flattering you to ensure she didn’t cause offence.

BatchCookBabe · 22/08/2025 23:05

We haven't had one of these for a while! 😬 'I met someone today who thought I looked so YOUNG!' 😆

limescale · 22/08/2025 23:14

She might have been about to say “ha….you wait another 10 years” and then thought she’d better err on the side of caution and possibly offence so went for 20 years.
She can see you’re younger than her. You only seem to know her age to within 5 years, she may well be late 50s.

Yes. It's like when people ask how old I think they look.
Unless I hate them, I always aim at least a decade younger than I really think.
On the other hand, why do people ask this question?
I would only tell the truth on one of those Mumsnet threads with the photo of a weary middle aged woman 😁

How many years do you add to the people you hate?! 😂

DancingNotDrowning · 23/08/2025 21:30

she thinks you’re early 40s but a mix of playing it safe and not doing the precise mathematical calculation and saying “in 13 years” or whatever
