Three days next week with dcs aged 12, 15, 18 and 20.

Edinburgh castle? Camera Obscura? Couple of Festival shows? What else should we not miss out on?

To me, cobbles are small stones that cover a street, setts are bigger ones, like the edge of the curb on a pavement.

Scottish national gallery and hollyrood were both excellent for us. Climb Arthur’s seat if you like a good walk and weather is right! We enjoyed the Scottish parliament tour too. If you’re there when fringe on the catching a show would be great.

Go to Stockbridge for a wander along the water of Leith - it's absolutely charming. Either way is lovely, but going up to the Modern Art Gallery is a great way to get there. In Stockbridge there's Lannan bakery which is incredibly busy (think long queues everyday) - not sure it completely meets the hype but it's v popular with young people.

This is why I love Mumsnet. A thread on tourist recommendations gets sidetracked on technical definitions of road coverings.

if You go to Stockbridge civerino’s pizza is great for teenagers, you get a huge pizza to share. The charity shops are good too

14 year old enjoyed Camera Obscura and so did we!

Portobello beach is lovely, get the pizza and ice cream and have a walk along, play in the arcades. It's a gorgeous place to go.

I second the recommendation for the Alpine rollercoaster. We've been a few times now and it's always enjoyed!
