@BlueEyedBogWitch I know what you mean, but then I thought of another American term that means it does actually work.
It's not the meaning you're thinking of, but because they are close it's easy to interpret it that way.

About yesterday's purple - th contentious one was Hock as a homophone for Selling.

It wasn't hock as we'd understand it in the UK, as in take to a pawnshop.

It was Hawk, as in 'to hawk your wares' or a trader being called a Hawker. In most American accents, hock and hawk sound the same.
