How often do you clean your car?

Do you diy or pay someone?

My DH does car cleaning duties here for both our cars. Usually at least once a month in summer on weekend morning. In the winter we just go to a drive through car wash but probably less frequency than the summer.

Mrsmunchofmunchington · 19/08/2025 11:05

I can’t drive anymore due to disability but I never ever cleaned my car.
I had horses so it was a sort of mobile tack and feed room.
I had a theory that the dirt was probably holding it together!
At one stage I had grass growing on the back carpet after transporting hay and later I had accidentally left a window open so the rain got in to water the dropped seeds.

I am completely the opposite about my home but cars have never mattered to me beyond being reliable.

ShesTheAlbatross · 19/08/2025 11:05

Clean my car? That’s what rain is for.

I personally never do other than removing rubbish.

I pay for someone to do it every month or so.
cleaning the car is one of my most hated chores and if I can afford it I’ll pay.

Honeypizza · 19/08/2025 11:14

Probably about 3 times a year. I would wash it more often but it gets immediately muddy/dusty so I struggle to see the point. I usually use the jet wash machines to wash the outside and will occasionally stick some coins in the hoovers that are at some car wash places to do the inside.

StillFeelingTired · 19/08/2025 11:17

DH calls my car ‘The wheelie bin’

so not that often. However I have discovered that mentoes left under the seat for several months are still good.

you are welcome.

Betsy95 · 19/08/2025 11:19

Rarely.

I occasionally clear any rubbish etc out and maybe handwashing it myself once or twice a year.

I find it super weird when people focus on having their car spotlessly clean, a bit obsessive with appearance imo.

Jennalong · 19/08/2025 11:20

Had my car two years,( second-hand ) gone to a diy handbags place 3 times and hovered twice .
Thinking of a full valet as its pretty dirty atm .

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 19/08/2025 11:21

I empty rubbish out of it when necessary but pay for other cleaning. I don't tend to eat or drink in the car but I have a big dog and live in an area with lots of trees. I have the top spec clean prob once a quarter. I remove bird poo from the paintwork myself, as soon as I see it.

PhilippaGeorgiou · 19/08/2025 11:23

They need cleaning?

Whiskyfromsmallglasses · 19/08/2025 11:24

Once a week wash and hoover and I remove any rubbish that day

TheNightingalesStarling · 19/08/2025 11:24

When its needed, depending on what we've used it for. Muddy field vs quiet roads vs motorway driving etc

DH takes it to a car wash to get the salt etc from the underneath regularly in winter to stop corrosion.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 19/08/2025 11:25

Well we aren’t like normal folk, but you did ask. DH and I work in the motor trade and have our own small collection of cars as well as a ‘daily’ each. Our cars are all stored in a unit so we love going on a Saturday morning and doing a full valet on usually 3 at a time, so we normally do both our every day cars and one of the ‘collection’. The collection normally has one car at a time taxed which we drive for a bit then tax a different one, they’re all modern or future classics (we hope!) so we like to use them. But we are a bit strange as we absolutely love valeting cars. We appreciate most people
we know think we are weirdos!

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 19/08/2025 11:26

I guess I go through the carwash about every 3 weeks in winter (living in the countryside and it gets very muddy!) and maybe every 6/8 weeks in summer. I handwash it at home about 3 times a year. I deep clean the interior (fairly deep, as in hoovering nooks and crannies and wiping hard surfaces, I don't clean the upholstery!) about 4 times a year. It's generally pretty manky in there - I would definitely want prior warning before giving anyone a lift!!

Toothurgh · 19/08/2025 11:31

once, I took my test in DHs car so hoovered the inside, but apart from that I we don’t clean the outside or the inside.

VenusClapTrap · 19/08/2025 11:32

Mobile valeter comes and does it once a month.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 19/08/2025 11:34

I get it washed at the car wash and hoover it out every couple of weeks - I love a shiny clean car!

TheDandyLion · 19/08/2025 12:27

I go to the jet wash every six months, rural roads are filthy with mud and grit in the winter and covered in bugs and dust in the summer.

thisfilmisboring123 · 19/08/2025 12:33

Errrrrmmmm….
Think it’s been cleaned 3 times in 18 months.

I’m sure my neighbours must think I’m a scruffy sod as they clean theirs weekly.
Mine looks very sorry for itself next to their nice and shiny one.

EveryDayisFriday · 19/08/2025 12:36

I pay to have a full valet every month, it's a company car so I am reimbursed from work.

It gets filthy because we go camping every couple of weeks.

Comedycook · 19/08/2025 12:38

Pretty much never...dh occasionally does it. My father used to say cleaning your car was for the lower middle classes 😂

Katiepants27 · 19/08/2025 12:38

Rarely clean the inside, but DH washes it about once a month in summer, weekly in winter.
Wet, salty winter roads are a fast track to rust/corrosion, so washing the salt off is well worth doing to prolong the life of the car and save money on repairs.

PashaMinaMio · 19/08/2025 12:44

I clean my car about once a month and wax polish it too. More often if it’s very dusty or I’ve driven a muddy rural route.

I clear rubbish very regularly and vacuum the inside as needed.

I see it as good exercise!

I paid a lot for my car which is a joy to drive, so I’m invested in it and want to take care of it.

Walkacrossthesand · 19/08/2025 12:53

While we’re in a drought, with hosepipe bans, and water companies applying for licences to extract water from precious waterways because levels are so low, car washing should have been stopped weeks ago. Humph.

zingally · 19/08/2025 13:04

I take it to one of those handwash places about twice a year, where a little gang of people do it for me. Costs about £15.
In between, I'll give it a cursory wash when I think it's looking especially grubby.
In all, it maybe gets 3-4 washes a year, of varying vigour. I'm pretty sure it's last wash was in April, and only because I was dropping it at a valet parking place the next day, and I didn't want them to think I was a total scummo.

The guy who lives next door to me washes his once a fortnight. Has a jet washer and everything! I've just got a bucket and a couple of sponges!
