Why does coffee not have any affect on me?

whiterabbity · 18/08/2025 16:36

I don’t think I have ADHD, I don’t have any of the symptoms. But for some reason, coffee does not stimulate me at all, no matter how much I have. I can have one at 10pm and fall asleep shortly after. Is anyone else like this??

Yep, never bothered me either. It makes me anxious if I have too much but doesn't keep me awake

DelilahMy · 18/08/2025 16:38

Yes. Someone asked ne recently how I could sleep after a coffee at 9pm. It doesn’t affect me.

Disturbia81 · 18/08/2025 16:39

I’m the opposite but I’ve known a few people like you personally, they drink it at night and it doesn’t stimulate them at all.
And on a general level I know certain cultures have coffee late at night

I have no idea, but I'm the same. In my wild youth, I also found that lots of illicit drugs didn't have the same strong effect on me as they did on others, either. I've often wondered if it's related.

SwedishEdith · 18/08/2025 16:42

Same. I am a night owl but always have been so I don't think that's because of drinking more strong coffee as an adult. I've never experienced that "I can't function without a coffee" feeling. I just drink out of habit - 3 a day with/after meals.

SheSmellsSeaShells · 18/08/2025 16:43

I used to be like this (and felt quite smug about it!) but now it really affects me 😩

Btowngirl · 18/08/2025 16:44

Doesn’t get me at all. Also no neurodivergence that I know of!

AnonSugar · 18/08/2025 16:44

I’m the same. Can drink coffee then an energy drink and have a nap 😆

Cinaferna · 18/08/2025 16:45

It never affected me until I started taking ADHD medication. Now a late night coffee can keep me awake half the night. I have to remember not to drink it, as for decades I could drink double espressos and sleep like a log straight afterwards.

Devilsmommy · 18/08/2025 16:46

Caffeine has zero effect on me either. Every night I have a cappuccino before bed. I do drink 25-30 tea and coffees a day so I've got one hell of a tolerance I expect 😂

GreenAndWhiteStripes · 18/08/2025 16:47

I'm the same. I can drink coffee right before bedtime and it won't affect my sleep, or if I drink it in the morning I don't seem to get the instant rejuvenation that some people seem to get. I don't have ADHD.

Came here to suggest undiagnosed ADHD.

MrsAlgernon · 18/08/2025 16:47

Yes, I love taste of caffeinated drinks and they don't stop me from sleeping.
My grandma, her soul be rested, was the same, she had coffee every night before bedtime!

As for other substances, I haven't tried. Alcohol just makes me tired but doesn't give buzz or give introvert-extrovert personality change.

Thankfully ADHD medication effect is as clear as day and night.

RampantIvy · 18/08/2025 16:48

I'm the opposite. I'm really sensitive to caffeine and can't sleep if I drink anything containing caffeine in the evening.

ohbee · 18/08/2025 16:48

I do have ADHD and I’m unaffected by coffee, I don’t take meds for the ADHD.

SophiaSW1 · 18/08/2025 16:49

No effect on me either. I guess everyone is just different

I thought I was the only one with 25-30 tea and coffees a day.

(PS. before anyone asks, I don't get weird withdrawals either when I don't have my daily caffeine fix)

Finally a kindred spirit 😊 people always question about my kettle and that it must just be on all day. I tell them I'm not an amateur, I've got a 5 litre hot water dispenser and am weighing up whether to get the 10 litre instead 😂

senua · 18/08/2025 16:54

I'm another one who is not stimulated by coffee. I'm bemused by those who say "I only need half a cup to have me bouncing off the ceiling".
Most of my intake is instant stuff but proper coffee doesn't affect me either.

SwedishEdith · 18/08/2025 16:56

What's the ADHD link?

I've sometimes considered giving up caffeine to then reintroduce it to see if I experience any kick from it then.

ADHD responds well to stimulants, caffeine is a stimulant.

Heard more of link between ADHD and excessive caffeine consumption, but not ADHD and caffeine insensitivity.

I've done zero-caffeine all my first pregnancy - so I was curious to see if there would be extra sensitivity after that but it wasn't obvious.

MillingAround · 18/08/2025 17:04

I don’t drink coffee now as it gives me headaches, but it never used to have any impact on my sleep. I could have a cup right before bed and still sleep well.

Yes I replace my kettle about every 2-4 years. Hot water tap is my dream, but 5L and 10L water dispensers sound promising!

It makes such a difference being able to just get the hot water straight away. My 5l one was £92 on Wayfair and I bloody love it 😊
