Dry socket?

I had my wisdom tooth extracted 48 hours ago and the pain is so bad I’m really worried I might have dry socket! Has anyone ever had this? I don’t know what to do with it now being the weekend:(

Do NOT EVER use clove oil either directly on gum or in socket. It is acidic and will burn and make things worse. The best place for clove oil is in the bin. I have had to take out teeth where clove oil has burnt through to the bone

Oops. Sorry op. It was great for me, not sure where I read to use it.

I had this recently and had it packed every couple of days for the first week plus strong prescribed pain killers and anti biotics. I used bonjela in between pain killers and the dentist gave me a syringe to do warm salt washes. The first week was definitly the worst, I was on regular pain killers for another 2 weeks after that.

I’ve just been seen again and had it re packed! Any tips on how to keep the packing in, terrified it’s going to fall out again :(

They haven’t given me antibiotics as they said it doesn’t look infected, so they have just repacked it but I’m terrified it’s just going to fall out again in a few hours:( can wait for this agony to be over!

It is horrendous, I remember thinking maybe they’d done some permanent nerve damage and this is just life now, it really felt like it would never end! The packing will gradually come out, just keep up with pain killers and bonjela and then get it repacked - my dentist said I could go as often as I needed and they would clean it and repack it each time, she was very sympathetic. If they haven’t prescribed stronger painkillers, ask for some, even just to help overnight for a few days.

Thank you so much! How long did you intense pain last?! I’m day 6 since extraction now and I’m fed up!:(

Oh no! I do seem to recall that the packing did stop the worst of the pain. Have you held an ice pack to your face? I think you might have to count from the day you lost the clot. It was 10 days in all but not so bad towards the end. You're literally waiting for nature to take its course and for it to grow over. Try and take care of yourself to aid healing, which is difficult. As I said before, I couldn't work it was so bad. Think I just sat on the sofa in the night and dozed a bit. It really is a horrible thing, but time is passing. Are you booked in again? I was prescribed strong codeine and was given a script for antibiotics just in case but didn't need them.

The last lot of packing I had seemed to just aggravate it even more:( I have a constant ice pack attached to my face at the moment, I was always given codeine but I don’t like taking them because they space me out so much and didn’t really do a lot for the pain. They did say if I’m no better by Thursday to go back and they can prescribe antibiotics, although they didn’t think it looked infected. I’m only day 4 since loosing the clot so I still have a way to go yet then:( most horrendous pain I have ever experienced, and I have kids to look after too!

I do feel for you! I think the first time my dc were 3 and 4, but luckily my job was casual. Its hard to explain the pain to people. Can you find childcare and just doze through the codeine?

It was over a week for the worst of it and around 3 weeks in total. After a few days on the strong pain meds (they’d only prescribe a few days) I was taking a panadol/nurofen combo that you can take 6 hourly. To start with I only got a couple of hours relief, but that gradually built up to longer periods, I took the maximum dose every single day for 3 weeks though. They didn’t take the pain away completely but for those periods of relief it reduced the pain to a dull ache unless I touched anywhere near the area.

Evening everyone, I’m now day 9 of having dry socket and the pain has eased a lot which is amazing but I’m still feeling very tender and it still hurts to eat!
When will I be able to eat properly again?
