My DH is due to go away for a little while for work (until middle of next year) and I thought I’d try and set myself a challenge / goal or something while he’s away but I feel like I want it to be a bit random.

So…. What random skill do you have / what thing can you do that can be learnt by putting in a few minutes of effort a day (maybe a little more).

I’m thinking something like learning to do the splits or being able to do a cryptic crossword or anything really.( not running related…The teen and I are working on improving our 5k time anyway and not interested in larger distances.)

Thanks. I’ll try and update on progress too if I can stick to whatever I choose

The NYT puzzles every day

Crochet! Many Attic24 rainbow blankets

Standing on one leg for the full 2 mins when brushing teeth / squatting for 2 mins

Minecraftmadness · 16/08/2025 21:31

Thanks! I do some of the NYT puzzles already - might try a few more.
Crochet comes and goes in my life but I’m not really a blanket person. Might just aim to finish the things I’ve started previously though as they’re stashed away somewhere!

Things I've learnt randomly (for Rebel Badge Club badges):

  • semophore
  • NATO alphabet
  • Morse code
  • Learning to play the piano
  • Basic foreign language skills

Things I'd like to learn:

  • A couple of good magic/slight of hand tricks
  • Juggling with 3+ balls
  • To touch my toes or do pushups, or one of those joga headstand poses!!
Minecraftmadness · 17/08/2025 19:49

Good ones! Think I might try a daily yoga practice so I can get a bit more flexibility - my toes are very far away. I do have a piano in the house that’s a bit sad and lonely because the teenager never uses it so could try and learn a tune or two!

I can do the nato alphabet but I think I’d forget the others as soon as I’d learnt them unfortunately. Things don’t stick in my brain unless I’m using them regularly (need NATO alphabet for work so that’s fairly entrenched)

what’s the bet that after 9 months my only achievement is actually a lot of Netflix!

Just googled the Rebel Badge Club.

I LOVE a badge. I used to get unhealthily involved in the kids clubs & scouts badge earning!

Off to buy a book…..

I can:
Juggle (with 3 balls)
Crochet
Knit
Do a tai chi sequence
Do the Times cryptic crossword

coffeeagogo · 17/08/2025 20:30

I’m working on doing 10 full press-ups, up to 6 so far (you sound fitter than me tho!)

TeenToTwenties · 17/08/2025 20:32

I can write backwards. Not a lot of use on the whole however.

MorrisZapp · 17/08/2025 21:22

I can do a Northern Soul shuffle

FictionalCharacter · 17/08/2025 21:34

I can do a Northern Soul shuffle

Oh I'd like to do that! How did you learn?

shellyleppard · 17/08/2025 21:37

Build Lego?? There are some really lovely botanical sets or they have a lovely Japanese range. My latest project....

I can do a Northern Soul shuffle

I was going to say I can dance to Northern soul records
Then again I should bloody think so after 44years of doing it.😁

My Dd has got mad into yoyo.
She has a super fancy one and the tutorials online are amazing!

Wolfpinkola · 17/08/2025 22:02

Headstand / handstand / human pyramids are a fun one at parties.

butterfly0404 · 17/08/2025 22:11

I'm learning bass guitar , definitely work in progress
I bake and decorate wedding cakes and other celebration cakes as a side hustle and enter competitions for them - started this just baking cupcakes for family and it grew
I do modern jive to keep fit and socialise at the same time, took that up after my cancer diagnosis.

Sharkpenis · 17/08/2025 22:16

I can tie a full knot in a strawberry lace with my tongue

I can "crack" my own coccyx

I can bend and put my hands flat on the floor between my feet without bending my knees.

I can feel the egg being released from my ovary

Touch my fingers to my inner forearm

I can lucid dream

I have this thing where I like to count to self soothe. If I dont have a pattern that is satisfying for me to count, I have a "file" of images that I can bring up in my head and then count. Windows and doors are my favourite

MetalliCat89 · 17/08/2025 22:21

I can crack an egg one handed and not break the yolk.
I can also open bottles with my teeth (I don't anymore though because I'm old and I'm too scared to break a tooth now ).
I can whistle with my fingers really loudly.
I can do most stuff quite well with my non dominant hand but am not ambidextrous level.

DeirdreChambersWhatACoincidence · 17/08/2025 22:21

I can accurately tell the weight of something, it comes from years and years of cooking and baking. (Something I can pick up in one hand, I should clarify. I'm not talking livestock.)

I can tell the time within a minute or two either way, without having looked at a clock for hours.

elQuintoConyo · 17/08/2025 22:43

Put lipstick on by holding it between my boobs (watched Breakfast Club too many times!).

Cross stitch - I design my own, some are sweary, some tv-related for geekiness, some poetry quotes, lots are anarchic! I've done some with glow in the dark thread.

I can skip lots of different ways, like boxers etc do for exercise.

I've recently dipped my toe into writing, but nothing completed, certainly nothing published.

AmyDudley · 17/08/2025 22:45

I'm extremely good at anagrams. I can just 'see' what the word is, have always been good at them. I feel I can boast about it as it is an utterly useless skill.😁
I can also do most things (including write) with both hands (again useless and not anything I worked to achieve)
I can also name all the states of America, and all the countries of Africa (also useless but I did have to put a certain amount of effort into learning them.)

Normal useful skills (like learning a foreign language) I struggle with. It also took me about 700 attempts to pass my driving test, but hey I can write with both hands, go me !!

I hugely admire people who can decorate cakes, I wish I was any good at it.
I hope you are recovering well from your illness Flowers

TheTeasmaid · 17/08/2025 22:58

I have an interest in archaeological research, particularly in ancient Egypt, as well as the history of the USSR/CCCP during the Cold War period, among other topics.

TheRookieMum · 18/08/2025 09:18

Carve things from wood - gnomes, mushrooms, spoons.

Learn to identify all the birds / butterflies / flowers in your garden.

Origami.

First aid.

Learn the history of your area, or a favourite area you can visit as a family once DH is back.

MagpiePi · 18/08/2025 09:34

The skill I would like is to be able to saw wood in a straight line. Can’t do it with a hand saw or an electric one despite all kinds of efforts to rig up guides.

I am currently trying to learn the South African national anthem off by heart.

I once sliced a block of cheese into two pieces that weighed EXACTLY the same. I wouldn’t call this a skill though.

My anti-skill is leaving cupboard doors and drawers open. It annoys the fuck out of me and if I lived with someone else I’m sure I’d have been under the patio a long time ago.
