Male beauticians in nail spas

Just your thoughts really.

I live in a town that has a number of beauty salons that do nails and other stuff and a couple of nail places that are “ cash only” . I avoid these as potentially they could be dodgy.
I booked a new salon online and it turned out to be a cash only Vietnamese place. I went in and saw a man and women at reception. She promptly left leaving just the guy and then two younger guys in their 20’s came out of the back. None of them spoke much English . Had an ok pedicure with one if them but it felt odd especially the massage bit . We had an odd word chat.
It’s not that I think they’d do a bad job but I can’t imagine they’ve much training as someone who’s been to college here. And the whole thing felt awkward. With younger women theres a bit of empathy as they’ll doubtless have their had nails done themselves

Spoken to my friends and men doing manicures and pedicures seems fairly common. Apart from the poor English they didn’t mind.
Fir context I used to have the best male waxer who did a fast ,through and pain free Brazilian. So am I am bring sexist, racist or justified in feeling weird about these guys.
What are MN thoughts?

Very common, dont really get the problem.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 13/08/2025 22:39

Modern slavery was my first thought.

SimplySoo · 13/08/2025 22:39

I think it sounds like the human trafficking/modern day slavery nail bar in my suburb that was raided recently.

Why do you need empathy when having your nails done?----

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 13/08/2025 22:40

I’ve had a young man (around 30-ish) do my nails a few times.
He and his wife are Vietnamese, but London born and bred.
My nails always looked A1.

I have ugly feet bunions etc. Men tend to have tougher skin and stronger ligaments.
I know they aren’t podiatrists but feet are important maybe. I get some people are just having colour put on.

Yes, modern slavery was my first thought too. Poor people.

notimeforregrets · 13/08/2025 23:01

Modern slavery, at least where I am .

MamaElephantMama · 13/08/2025 23:05

I have had a man do my nails for the past few months and he is amazing. He is an absolute perfectionist.

The salon has been done to a very high standard and the staff are all young and come across as great friends.

Loads of cash in hand nail places round here. Yes to pps, modern slavery. Not qualified & significantly cheaper. No booking required, just walk in and wait.
They are always packed out. I won't use them but did a few times in past, heard horror stories about nail infections/and I had a crap shellac job that lifted within days. We shouldn't be supporting these places 😕

pizzaHeart · 13/08/2025 23:09

I wouldn’t mind either male or female, however female would be my preference. My main criteria is the place not being dodgy. So I would be reluctant to go to a place with all staff Chinese/Vietnamese looking ( I would suspect modern slavery) , especially cash only.

Throwitawayagain · 13/08/2025 23:21

I would 100% be cautious of any set up that feels like slavery could be an issue.

But male nail tech? Fine. I always get mine done by a local guy. He is very good. He's Vietnamese and he and his wife own the business. Everything done above board. Not all Vietnamese nail businesses are dodgy.

Crushed23 · 14/08/2025 13:32

My nail salon happens to only have female staff. I wouldn’t mind a male worker doing my nails any more than I would mind a male orthopaedic doctor examining a broken hand.
