Back in the day before smart meters it was getting on the floor to report meter reading s

My least favourite is hoovering the stairs. I find manhandling the vacuum cleaner on the stairs gets me all hot and bothered.

Physically awkward? My house has a weird layout and my hoover lives in a cupboard behind the sofa so I used to have to climb over the sofa and then lift the hoover out back over the sofa. It was a right pain and contributed to my lack of hoovering! I now have a robot hoover that lives under the sofa. Other hoover barely gets to leave ita cupboard now!

I also hate hoovering the stairs. Also changing mid sleeper/bunk beds. Fortunately I no longer have to do that as the bunks are gone and midsleeper teen can do their own now.

Changing the bedding gives me existential angst every time. I want lie down inside the bastardisation king size duvet and weep!

Notellinganyone · 13/08/2025 15:03

Bastard!

Agree with PP re stairs, also removing cobwebs from double height ceiling (wafting a 3m long pole with a duster on the end is pretty useless) changing king size fitted sheets (like putting a condom on a fridge) and changing lightbulbs because they never go back in properly!

Changing the mid sleeper

Getting our curved shower screen door clean including all the grippy rubber bits

dusting on top of the wardrobes

dusting the really pretty glass-bauble dangly chandelier thingy over the stairs - impossible to reach from any angle

Oh dear! The meter reading. When I was much younger and more romatically inclined I rented a flat in a very, very old Italian building.

One of those very tall, tottery buildings with a toilet and shower built into the tiny balcony with a limited degree of success. To read the water meter, I had to climb into the shower, open an outside window which made up one side of the shower partition and had completely rotten wooden frames.

That was exciting in itself but the actual water meter was some distance away, sort on a drainpipe and the plastic cap was sealed almost shut with pigeon guano.

It was so much fun hanging almost upside down out of a window about five storeys up, one foot on the slippery shower tray, scraping at bird dung with a butter knife.

I don't mind actual hoovering, what I hate is having to cut all the hair off the roller virtually every time I do. I need a hoover with brushes due to long haired cats, and humans that seem to shed just as much! But god I hate that job, it's gross. They should invent a hoover where you can just press a button and it will expel all the hair at once.

In a similar vein, emptying the dishwasher/food trap and even worse, unscrewing the bottom bit of the sink when caustic soda isn't working.

@DancingLions , go over with a rubber broom before vacuuming.

DancingLions · 13/08/2025 17:06

@HouseAshamed I'll give it a go! Can't hurt to try.
