If you had brought me tap water as requested rather than insist only mineral water was available, I would have ordered another round of alcoholic drinks and dessert.

I don’t want to spend six euros on water but I would have spent that and more on more drinks and dessert.

Did you not read up on cultural norms before you visited? It’s normal in Germany to not free serve tap water, you are expected to buy water. Going to another country and then whinging about the way they do things is 🙄. Just buy the water or don't use restaurants or don’t visit.

So I presume you never drink tap water ans it’s so “minging” Are you in the UK? How much are you spending on bottled water a week?

I don't. And the answer is about £5. It isn't that expensive!

@Stopsnowing
Come to France...... here it's a legal obligation for a restaurant to serve you tap water if you ask for it with your meal.
Leitungswasser is a word I learnt early on when travelling in Germany.

TitaniasAss · 13/08/2025 16:36

It's not minging where I live in the UK (west coast of Scotland).

Tap water is minging anyway. Just buy the bloody water. If you can't afford it then should you really be eating out?

Ha ha!

dynamiccactus · 13/08/2025 16:38

Bottled water is a tax on stupidity.

Tap water (in the UK) is fine. You just need to filter it in some places.

It's not normal to get free tap water in restaurants in Germany. It's also unusual to drink tap water at all.

I routinely ask for, and get, Leitungswasser in Germany. HTH.

And you would still be told nein, in the vast majority of restaurants there.

Lots of places in Europe will charge for tapwater. Other countries, other rules.
