Just come into a smallish inheritance and would love to use it to have a holiday which is a really memorable experience. Looking at being able to spend approximately £5k each. What would you choose?

For me it would be Japan

way2serious · 09/08/2025 16:06

@MounjaroBingo Thank you. I had thought of lots of places but not Japan so a really helpful suggestion!

Australia! Has been on my bucket list forever - finally got the chance to go a few months ago. Best 6 weeks of my life. Such an amazing country with so much to see and do.

During the blossom season if possible!

way2serious · 09/08/2025 16:09

@Cappuccino5 Strangely Australia just doesn’t appeal to me.

What do you like doing? History? scenery ?
Food? Walking? Hard to say without a bit more information!!

Defiantly41 · 09/08/2025 16:18

Australia or New Zealand
West coast Canada & Vancouver Island & bear watching
South Africa - Cape Town history, Franshoeck wineries, Hermanus whales, safari
Japan
Vietnam/Cambodia
Thailand
Malaysia
Hong Kong or Singapore
East coast USA for leaf-peeping

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/08/2025 16:20

Bhutan is my bucket list.

I travel a LOT and have been to 40+ countries but tend to do it somewhat on the cheap. Bhutan is expensive by its nature!

Places I think are amazing; Mongolia, Central America (especially Guatemala), Mexico, South East Asia, I mean everywhere really!

RattyMcBatty · 09/08/2025 16:22

Antarctica
Newfoundland
A safari

Plantaineater · 09/08/2025 16:23

Either Tanzania / Kenya safari, or s e Asia - Thailand, Laos, Cambodia etc

Themagicfarawaytreeismyfav · 09/08/2025 16:29

South Africa is amazing
ive never been but vietnam, cambodia and Japan are all on my list

LittleGreenDuck · 09/08/2025 16:32

Costa Rica.

katscamel · 09/08/2025 16:40

Japan is amazing but to see it properly you need 3+ weeks. Last time I went i managed Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, would love to see more though.
I'd like to go back to Sri Lanka and see more....and buy more gemstones. I'd also like to see more of Canada... the West Coast this time
Have you thought about Centrsl Asia? Lots to see in Uzbekistan and tourism has developed a fair bit since I was there.

tramtracks · 09/08/2025 16:47

What about the Etosha national park north Namibia - for a safari. It’s incredible.

way2serious · 09/08/2025 16:59

Thanks everyone. Lots to research so thanks for all your suggestions. I probably am thinking more Asia, and something that includes seeing animals.

How about Borneo in that case? And you could easily tie it in with a stopover in Singapore or Kuala Lumpur to to split the journey up - both of which I love!

PearlsPearl · 09/08/2025 18:32

I came on to say Japan! I think to do it justice you need money. One day!

Lucky you. Enjoy the planning.

The Golden Triangle in India which includes seeing tigers would be a good choice.
We also loved Sri Lanka: lots of wildlife and less hectic than India.

Having been on safari in Africa I wouldn't rate it (long story why I went). You sit down all day in a very bumpy road vehicle & occasionally stand up to have a gawk. it's a lot cheaper if you can split costs with others.

I get impression that Asia is quite nature-depleted. Friend who is twitcher said he finds far East very depressing, so little bird song.

Colleague has a relative who does swimming with dolphins tours in New Zealand. That would be memorable and animals and not sitting in a car all day.

Me neither. Japan is next on our list

Purpleturtle45 · 10/08/2025 12:04

Japan or a safari

Titsywoo · 10/08/2025 12:06

Galapagos

Scottie1310 · 10/08/2025 12:09

Would recommend Singaore then add it onto other places like Malaysia. I really fancy Canada, the rockies and Banff etc

Newmummypamela · 10/08/2025 12:12

We are just back from 3 weeks holiday in Asia - best holiday we've ever been on (6 days in Seminyak, Bali, 2 days in Ubud, Bali then 5 days in Singapore and finished up with a week in Koh Samui, Thailand). Our teens (13 & 16) are difficult to impress and they were blown away by all of it. If I were to do it again, would do more time in Ubud (saw monkey forest, rice fields, temples, coffee plantation, Bali swing but was rushed). Singapore's Gardens by the Bay and night safari were fab - also did Universal Studios which wouldn't really be my thing.
