Help!! DD swallowed a little elastic band.

DD has just accidentally swallowed a small elastic band. One of the tiny ones that goes in children’s hair. She is nearly 12, and I have no idea what she was thinking having it in her mouth. But she has laughed and swallowed it. She feels totally fine, but I’m a little worried. Do I need to have her checked out?

I am no medic, but I think she will be fine

She will be fine. It will be out in 12 hours. Silly girl

I can’t imagine so, I’d keep an eye out for blood in stool, vomiting or tunmy pain over the next few days but other than that I’m sure it’ll pass by itself x

Thank you. Hopefully all will be okay, but I will definitely keep a very close eye on her.

Probably a very strange question, but do we need to check her stool or anything for it passing?

Hopefully not, as I can’t imagine that would be very easy to do.

It is too small to get tangled up in anything and her stomach acid will probably destroy it so you will be grovelling around in her poo looking for nothing!

Unfortunately yes you do!

doodleschnoodle · 07/08/2025 21:35

I would not be checking the poo of a 12yo for a tiny elastic band. It’ll pass fine.

KeepThisQuick · 07/08/2025 21:36

@doodleschnoodle - phew!!! Was hoping that would be the consensus.

I think she will be alright. Remember all those dire warnings about swallowing chewing gum?

Obviously a different species but our cat once swallowed an, "Escape From Atlantis" board game little wooden figure. She turned out fine. The main panic was when she seemed to be hawking and wobbling all over her body and my dad sprung into action, "Stroke her throat!" whereas my mum was more in favour of the Heimlich manœuvre.

The stroking throat option won the day and it was all alright. Still one little man short on the board game though, I suppose.

Not that our family were ever very keen on board games and the, "Choking Sacha" incident was our ideal let out never to play them again. It was an omen.
