The rise of the Chat GPT idiot

There are two of them in middle management at work now. No creativity, no new ideas, can't actually string a sentence together in writing, but management has been wowed by their overly long, formal emails and 12-page, emoji-bullet-pointed action plans that don't actually say anything or solve anything.

If you can't beat them @Viot...

TheAutumnCrow · 05/08/2025 20:26

It’s the new big thing on MN too.

Have you asked ChatGPT?

ChatGPT says that …

Or posts that have clearly been ‘assisted’ by ChatFuckingGPT.

TheAutumnCrow · 05/08/2025 20:26

My ChatDP agrees, btw.

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/08/2025 20:30

I had to ask ChatGPT to stop being so obsequious. Yes, I want you to give me a list of things to do in Oslo, no I don’t want you to tell me how great I am for thinking of Oslo. I think shit managers like it because it’s an arse-licker.

I'm sure I read that it's becoming more sycophantic, because users react positively to "How CLEVER you are to think of going to Oslo! Oslo certainly is a place that wildly attractive and brilliant people like to visit!! Let me get you a list of cafes near the station as you so cleverly requested."

Is that why listings on ebay are so over the top now? I'm buying a second hand flower pot, I don't need to know how stylish and tasteful you think it is.

So funny! What was its reply?

winzom · 05/08/2025 20:43

I've just said a cheery goodnight to it. Ten minutes to find out all the options for tickets on public transport in Rome, how and where to buy, how much, how to validate, train times, works on the line, best route from A to B either bus, metro or tram. I would have spent an hour or more typing every single question into google. It's the follow up questions that GPT is great for.

I only use it for leisure things (for now). Can't complain about it yet.

DoYouReally · 05/08/2025 20:55

I agree with you. Chat GPT is loved most by those with no independent thought and with limited ability.

@MrsTerryPratchett is right. Obsequious is a great word for it!

I do however use it to update colour schemes and furnishings for my new house. So much quicker than pinterest, or searching or pating for interior designer!

GreenSmithing · 05/08/2025 21:00

There's a guy I work with who uses it to generate questions for him to ask in meetings

Not unrelated, his questions are often related to things that are a couple of years out of date...

defrazzled · 05/08/2025 21:03

I had this issue with my staff and solved it by putting their nonsensical gibberish into chat GPT and then hitting reply with no advice or context - the replies were so weird and long they all cottoned on and stopped it pretty quickly 😂

Theyll get found out. Bide your time

Theres at least one in my office, we are lawyers. He has relied on AI which makes up cases. He isnt clever enough to realise that.

MageQueen · 05/08/2025 21:08

Interesting OP. I saw a bit of this with some content that a client was generating. And it was so frustrating.

But, as it turned out, it very quickly became clear that the content was shit and people were pissed becuase there were mistakes and other issues.

The irony is that I think Chat GPT is BRILLIANT for content. I use it a lot. But it can't just be a once and done thing. Stick in a prompt saying, "write an article about the challenges of Chat GPT" and use the resulting article and you're not goingto get a particularly good article.

Hasn't that already happened? A lawyer lost a winnable case because she used Chat and it cited a case that was made up?

I did ask if when the machines rise that would be a point against me. ChatGPT will be taking me out, I think.

And he's giving out legal advice based on that?

i've been feeling like professional standards have completely gone down the toilet lately. I assumed it was lack of motivation that maybe it's people depending so much on AI.

I work with law firms. The top ones are thinking hard about how to implement AI in ways that improve their output and/or enhance efficiencies without increasing risk. A lot of work is being done on the training (of the LLMs AND of the lawyers) and research required to make it work effectively, and how to train lawyers to use it.

ETA - I pressed send too soon.

But a LOT of lawyers are not using it sensibly and we're seeing that a lot too. I think the gap between "good" and "bad" lawyer smight get wider with AI becuase the good ones will be using it to be better and the bad ones will be using it to get worse.

Yes, I think eBay has something built in to do this. Every other listing has the same nonsensical, uninformative gibberish. So annoying.
"This stylish anorak is ideal for day or evening wear, for the office or on holiday blah blah"
Yes but what's the bloody size and fabric???

Suasthuasanuas · 05/08/2025 22:13

I've copied and pasted cosmetics ingredients into it recently before buying to check if they will aggravate very sensitive skin. I've found it great for this.

GoldPoster · 05/08/2025 22:16

I’ve got seriously bored of ChatGPT and stopped using it, I don’t want to contribute to training it. It’s summaries can’t be trusted and the language is so bland and unoriginal

I asked it to give me a list of things to do in Madrid. It came up with things that weren't even in Madrid.
I wasn't polite. I told it off, "What the fuck is wrong with you? That's not even in Madrid. Stop talking shite"

I also asked it to plan a multi-day hike in the North of Norway, 15 km a day. It came up with utter shite. Some days were 70 km long. I told it to sort itself out. It didn't.

I asked it to come up with day hikes in my local area. It came up with utter bollocks. I told it that it would end up killing people if they tried to do they hikes it suggested and that people could end up stranded in the back of beyond with no public transport to the starting point if they followed its instructions.
I told it that it was thick as pig shit and should fuck off to the far end of fuck.

It's quite good if you want to release some anger.
It just deflects or says things like, "Of course, you're right. I'll try again and this time I will make sure I only list places in Madrid".
