What school bag for girl Year 7

If you have a child who has moved into / is moving into year 7, what school bag do they have & do you have any recommendations?

For primary we've used Hype backpacks. Large size, psychedelic colours, they've lasted the year. Each bag has cost around £50, & that's been reasonable for the quality. Do you go for something less jazzy for high school?

High school colours are navy and black. TIA.

Nike at our school. although dd1 and 2 never went for that because they are not interested and neither were in the popular group or have the desire to be. Dd3 is popular and it’s Nike bag or social suicide.

None of the girls in high school around here/ friends with my children have a backpack. All have plain black tote bags with small logos. Some have new look, river island, few Michael kors still floating around, have seen a few hype tote bags but white fox seems to be very popular again in the tote bag style

DS has a black north face vault and a XS north face duffel in dark blue for days when he has sport.
DD has a light blue North Face Berkeley for every day and similar style (a sports shop own brand copy) of the sports bag in turquoise.

Edit : to correct mistakes and add:
The boys in their school all seem to have black or very dark backpacks. The girls have more variety of colour, still mainly backpacks. According to a friend of mine with a similar aged DD who lives in the city, the girls mainly have tote bags. We live in a village and a lot of children bike or walk/bus into school in the closest town. So it will depend on area.

When I bought DD's bag I told her if she found it was wildly "wrong" she could request another, but it would be her Christmas present.

I would find out what they're using at that particular school as it tends to be a bit themed, I've noticed! So if you know an older child at the school maybe ask their parents?

Thanks, I don't know any other parents yet - new area. Hadn't considered tote bags.

I would say it also depends if they are walking or driving/ bus.
my two walk 30 mins each way and as the school doesn’t give them lockers their bags are heavy. So 100% backpack for them.

So far no complaints from them about being unfashionable, but hopefully they realise with the weight of the bags a backpack is much better for their backs

She will have a 10-15 min walk to/from bus stop then bus takes them almost to the school door.

Although I think the whole thing is ridiculous and we're very much a live and let live family. Some children are vicious and will judge and make life difficult if you 'get it wrong'. You have to be a really strong character not to let it bother you. It doesn't matter what people on here say, it needs to be relevant to the school she's going to and the friends she has.

Does she know people going to be in the same class/school? What's her opinion?

Here the younger years all have tote/handbag style bags. Older girls use backpacks, no logo or Nike.

My girls have never been bothered by brands etc but absolutely don't like to stand out so have all gone for plain bags as no brand is easier than the 'wrong' brand.

And if you have the money, I'd keep some aside just in case she changes her mind. Welcome to the minefield of the teenage years.

Nike/Adidas or totally plain black. The girls at DC’s school don’t seem to be that bothered tbh. But something low key when she starts can’t be a bad thing. She’ll find her style and see what she likes and by Christmas she might have some ideas of her own.

HolidayInCambodia25 · 05/08/2025 10:19

DD isn't bothered herself tbh. But I need to buy something to carry her stuff in. If I ask her what she wants I just get a shrug.

Surprised there aren't more threads/ recommendations on MN about this seeing as it's something they all need for September. But maybe everyone buys more or less the same thing!

Black Nike backpacks everywhere in our school.
