New Brownies Badge Book

44PumpLane · 04/08/2025 21:01

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone could help please- our Brownie leader has just let us all know there is a new mini badge book with some new badges in- some of them look like they will be real winners in this house, but we won't get the new books until we go back in September.

If anyone has the new book would you mind sharing a picture of the reading/book badge requirements and the badge with the unicorn on please? I'm just hoping we might be able to do a bit of work on them over the summer hols.

I wish they sold a pdf version of the booklet!

TIA

Sorry I can't help, but this will hopefully bump your post, or there is a Thread for Guiders but I'm not sure which topic it is in.

However, I have to say it seems quite odd the GirlGuiding UK website doesn't give you the information.

WelshBookWitch · 05/08/2025 00:15

Sorry i can't help, I only have the Guide and ranger books.
But I'll agree it's frustrating you can't download. Gg tell us it's because girls have asked for the books, but it would be massively helpful to be able to view online.

Can't help but jumping on to ask advice....I never went to Brownies so don't know how it works. Dd has started going and now has half a dozen badges, and I don't know what to do with them! There doesn't seem to be any point sewing onto her uniform, as she'll outgrow it. Where do we put them? All currently languishing at the bottom of her jewellery box.

My DD has a blanket that we sew all her badges onto ☺️

Well yes, over time she will out grow it, but surely, during the time she is a Brownie she would like to wear them on her uniform with pride ?

Not sure if it is still the case, but Brownies used to have a sash with them on.

44PumpLane · 05/08/2025 18:56

My girls have a sash, but I find them way too small for all the badges that they get.

Lots of the brownies sew them on to their uniform but I donated their Rainbows Uniform back to the pack when we left and intend to do the same with their Brownies uniform so didn't want to do that.

I think once they are done I will take all their badges and put them on a blanket for them to save them from getting lost!

Thanks everyone for the comments and bumps.....I totally agree that the kids enjoy a physical book, but agree WelshBookWitch that the option of also being able to download would be useful (not least because lots of the parents in our pack seem to lose their books and would probably benefit from a PDF copy)!

Thanks for the bump....the website tells you what the new badges are, but doesn't give a breakdown of the things you need to do to get the badge (as far as I can see.....I definitely could be wrong)!

No, I had a look last night, as the Scouts one does, so I presumed the Guides one might be similarly helpful - but, apparently not.

FunkyBrownie · 07/08/2025 13:51

So due to copyright I can't share a picture of the badge syllabuses or copy them out, but I CAN give you a summary of what you'd need to do which I hope helps your eager Brownie.

BOOK REVIEWER

  1. Find some examples of reviews of books you've read, then write your own book review
  2. Choose 2 books (one should be something you wouldn't normally choose) and write a review for both
  3. Choose a book to read based purely on it's cover. When you've finished it, redesign the cover and explain what you've changed and why

IMAGINATION (the one with the unicorn)

  1. Create a story with 3 random words given to you by someone else (like cheese/sponge/frog). Keep experimenting with new word combinations
  2. Create your own world where anything can happen. Choose how to show it - draw, make a model, etc.
  3. Play using your imagination - either on your own, with your friends or family

Have fun!

Most of mine buy a hoodie or gilet in a larger size that will hopefully last their 3 years with us, and sew all their badges on there. A couple have sashes but they're a pain to sew onto and if they get as many badges as our girls do they fill up pretty quickly - I did have one girl who had 2 and wore one across each should a la Rambo style lol!

Otherwise, start her a camp blanket which she can continue to fill during her Guiding adventures over the years

Lancrelady80 · 08/08/2025 00:14

Camp blanket sounds a good idea, thank you. Is there a special "Brownie approved" one that she has to have when it comes to camps, or is any blanket okay?

Any blanket is fine! Guiding do sell them if you wanted an official one, but any one will do. You can go for the wool type which are a bit more hardy, or the fleece ones which are more snuggly and lighter to carry

Lancrelady80 · 08/08/2025 19:23

Thank you! I just want to get things right for her. She doesn't find friendships easy and has been a bit "othered" in the past by girls her age who haven't always been kind about her differences (awaiting neurodevelopmental assessment) so want to minimise anything I can to make things easier for her. I really appreciate your advice.

Op, sorry for derailing!

IDontDrinkTea · 08/08/2025 19:29

We only have the rainbows one so can’t help with your request, but I do think the new badge books are brilliant and the tasks seem much better suited for the age group than the old ones

GuidingSpirit · 08/08/2025 19:42

Im a Brown Owl. The reason why Girlguiding doesnt put the badge syllabus on the website is because selling things like the badge books sends the profits straight back into Guiding. The exact figures are in the annual report and accounts but it helps to keep annual subscription down (girlguiding on the whole is significantly cheaper than scouts for annual subs - local subs obviously may differ.)

The annoying thing for me was that the new badge book wasnt published early enough to give to everyone before the summer holidays!

For the poster asking about badges, I think sewing them on a sash is nice, and then when she finishes brownies, sew the whole sash onto a blanket for guides. That's what I did when I was a brownie and what I will do for my two DDs when they start rainbows / brownies.

44PumpLane · 04/09/2025 19:12

@FunkyBrownie I just wanted to say thank you so much for the info you posted- we are nearly finished the Unicorn badge so it was a super help over the summer hols!
