We will be driving in a few weeks and would like the most scenic route, not worried if it takes longer.
Thanks in advance.

Take the A49. It gets more scenic as you go South, so when you come off it and head East to Birmingham depends on exactly how much longer you're prepared to let the journey be.

Depends where in Manc you're going from, Through the pennines is absolutely lovely though!

We do the route Maccesfield to Leek and then onto Ashbourne (A523) then to Lichfield & Birmingham (A515) which is nice (well nicer than the motorway). Don't often go as far as Manchester though.

The A49 is a good shout, and it takes you through my favourite parts of Shropshire and Herefordshire until you need to turn east for Brum.

Thanks to all, a few suggestions that hadn't occurred to me, so will be looking into them.
