Edinburgh festival/fringe for rookies

Taken opportunity to go to the festival for the first time soon and feeling a bit overwhelmed-travel and accommodation sorted. Any tips about how to navigate? Can you just turn up to things? Also recommendations for a nice pub tea for a special occasion.

Well done for sorting accommodation - that's often the biggest challenge!

Book shows in advance, one or two big names plus a bunch of random people you have never heard of. They're usually only an hour. Then just wander, absorb the atmosphere and free stuff and people who want you to go to their show.

Have a great time!

Yes, I agree; study the programme and select a few shows you fancy then just go to some random stuff. That's all part of the fun. You'll be inundated with suggestions if you wander along the Royal Mile.

We've seen a mixture of excellent comedians who years later became famous and some shows we couldn't wait to escape from. Memorably, the interpretative dance troupe who cunningly positioned themselves in front of the exit to make it too awkward to leave.

For a meal, I like places on Broughton Street or around the top of Leith Walk, Maybe Stockbridge too.

Remember it's traditional to climb Arthur's Seat! Not difficult and lovely views. And if you want somewhere else to get away from the crowds, the Botanics are lovely.

Or do something historical like a tour of Mary King's Close or the Vaults.

Edinburgh is fab. Have a great time!
