Can't get proper coal tar soap any more and now t gel theraputic has gone too.

If you have psoriasis, what do you use?
Thanks.

I know it's not coal tar but tea tree is great on the scalp.

Coal tar slows the overgrowth of skin cells, reduces inflammation, itching and pain.

Tea tree oil isn't the same. It's not a recognised medical treatment for Psoriasis. And with all the best will in the world, I wouldn't recommend anybody tries putting tea tree oil on open, sore Psoriasis whether of not your hair is coming out in clumps, as the feeling is rather akin to sticking your head in a beehive.

Frankly, with no other option apart from shaving my head so that the assorted steroids can get to it during flares, I'm putting in a bulk order for dog shampoo.

Ah ok. It worked well when I had an itchy scabby patch on my head.

StanfreyPock · 02/08/2025 16:03

Years ago my doctor prescribed Cocois ointment, which you put on your scalp for an hour or so, then wash off like a hair mask. Very effective and a mixture of coal tar, and coconut. Stinky but good.
OH still uses it now and again for his itchy scalp, mine has cleared up miraculously.

Nizoral was a game changer for me. Great product that works

NUFC69 · 02/08/2025 17:15

Many years ago when my DD was small I used to use coconut oil (at that time I actually had to melt it before use). I used a pastry brush to get it to her scalp. Leave for half an hour then wash it out. Eventually it went away and never came back on her scalp, although she has it elsewhere.

PuppyMonkey · 02/08/2025 17:22

I used to get Alphosyl which worked great for a while. For me, they all used to work well for a while and then they’d spontaneously stop working and I’d have to switch to something else. The smell of Polytar though. Yikes.

For some reason, probably menopause, I’m currently using Head and Shoulders Classic Clean with no problems at all. This has been three or four years. Maybe I’m just over scalp psoriasis?

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 03/08/2025 09:27

I bought the polytar, which smells very much like the neutrogena so im hopeful, and i have the other suggestions to try too, thanks everyone. Big thanks from my scalp too!!

That's not good news, it was really helping me in between the ginger shampoo 😏 I've just bought the E45 shampoo to try so I'll report back on that. Does anyone know if the doctor would prescribe anything if I asked? I have never asked them as I felt it was such a small thing but my scalp has been unbearable this week.

I didn't have any for years (also used H&S and other shampoos quite happily) ... Then it came back with a vengeance!

dynamiccactus · 04/08/2025 18:08

I used to have a really itchy scalp and used the peony shampoo by Klorane, I don't know if that might help someone.

Why on earth do manufacturers insist on discontinuing effective products (I did see the comment about the US law suit above, but it's so frustrating!)

Mine is insufferable. I finally caved and went to the doctor, who was really understanding and immediately prescribed Enstilar. It is a sort of spray foam you apply to your scalp. Three weeks in it's working really well, but you do go to bed with hair that looks like you've dipped it in chip fat. You have to wash it off every morning. I think this is preferable to having skin flakes flying off my head every time I move. I wore a black dress out for dinner last night - I haven't been able to wear black for months.

That's helpful, thank you. Glad you're seeing results. I don't have flakes, so suspect mine may be something else but anyway 2 washes in with the E45 shampoo it feels vaguely improved so fingers crossed 🤞

This was linked to on one of the psoriasis groups I'm in, it has recommendations for treatments to replace t-gel:

Kind of ironic that the Promoted by Mumsnet box we can't get rid of has been showing an advert for this specific version of T-Gel since the thread started.

(yes, I know, cookies and searches, but it still irritates).

Nizoral (the treatment one in tiny bottle)

Yes I used this plus Head & Shoulders original.

thismumneedssun · 04/08/2025 20:46

Oh no had no idea this had been discontinued, I got two bottles of it in home bargains today so some places do still have it! it's the only stuff that works for my head. Might go back tomorrow morning and stock up!

fthisfthatfeverything · 04/08/2025 20:48

I got 3 bottles on Amazon for £18 of T-Gel

home bargains also stock it

edited to say; it’s the dark brown one my hubby uses, they were the big bottles I got

I am currently looking for a dog shampoo with coal tar, did you have any luck?! DD is allergic to salicylic acid so think she'll react to Polytar.

thefirstmrsrochester · 31/07/2025 18:48

Plenty of t/gel shampoo in home bargains, and you can get the 2-in-1 in Sainsbury and Waitrose. I didn’t know that it was being discontinued so thanks for the heads up, I will be stocking up.

Are you sure it’s the brown coal tar one?! I felt tricked when I ordered it and it’s not the same!!

I use polytar for now and it seems to work

tryandbepositive · 08/04/2026 17:19

I bulk bought loads and now running out. Amazon are out and eBay looks dodgy fakes. Is it really over then? My poor scalp.

Are you in the U.K.? I bought T-gel from boots the other day. I’ve just checked Amazon and it’s still on sale with them.

hellswelshy · 08/04/2026 18:16

I'm now using Nizoral once a week then a mix of either Bodyshop ginger shampoo and the E45 shampoo in between. My scalp seems a bit calmer.

It’s the T-Gel therapeutic one though. T-Gel have a wide range of products but have discontinued this specific one. Amazon tend to take you to the scalp irritation one scan alternative

keepswimming38 · 12/04/2026 05:16

I haven’t found a suitable alternative. I’m really pissed off with T gel for doing this!
