It feels like autumn

Well it's typical isn't it.... glorious sunshine and heat during term time. As soon as my dc broke up for school last week, the weather has been rubbish. Today feels particularly awful though, so grey, drizzly...very autumnal feeling. It's so miserable. Anyone else feeling the same?

I admit I’ve had more energy since it’s gone a bit milder , heat and I are not good together!
I don’t want another really hot spell.

NC18264 · 29/07/2025 20:44

Yep. Grey and overcast with rain showers in my part of the NW the last week. Still too warm in the middle of the day to feel properly like autumn, but the mornings and evenings could definitely pass for it…

Wow you sound organised... I'm far too lazy to change curtains with the seasons!

It is out of necessity believe me! I have a drafty house that never warms itself up! I have big windows that let all the heat out etc ..a proper modern house this isn't! We have mega thick winter curtains on doors to try to ward off the worst of the drafts, its cosy when its done but I love to take it all down in spring! Now I am itching to put it all up again! Our candles blow themselves out if anyone opens a door to go to put the kettle on if I don't in autumn and winter lol !

IDontHateRainbows · 29/07/2025 20:51

Incoming heatwave in around 10 days time so it'll soon by time to get out the factor 30 again

TheCoralEagle · 29/07/2025 20:52

Definitely not.

We've been nipping to the beach most days for a swim, today included. Feels just like summer to me.

We walk back to the car in our swimmers so we can air dry a bit...even on days like today when it's been overcast, it's still nice and warm.

You won't catch me in the sea in a bikini in October though so it definitely does NOT feel like autumn to me now 😂

Stop exaggerating it’s still warm and sunny.

People are saying the seasons are nuts at the moment and it does feel different. I like rain , we need more of that. It’s been fairly dry where I live.

We most definitely need more rain - especially for those of us who are horticulturalists and growers and rely upon the precious, life giving liquid! My rain gauge has recorded a cumulative total of just 2 inches since late February and we need days, if not weeks, of steady rainfall to restore the soil moisture deficit and undo some of the damage done by the prolonged dry spell and blistering heat experienced this year - a cooler, wetter summer is always fine with me. And I believe much of the autumnal feel and tints are due to drought stress- the land is looking very 'sick' currently and many trees are really suffering

I worry about the lack of rain tbh.

Autumn is my favourite season. I can’t wait.

Me too. I'm glad it's cooler but not liking the rain as can't tidy the garden.

oliverreed · 29/07/2025 22:40

Nice to be a bit cooler. The light seems to be changing and there is definitely an autumn feel in the air. I really like it when we get to the end of August and start of September. Feels like a new beginning to me but I’m not sure why. Not looking forward to the dark, long winter nights.

hexsnidgett · 29/07/2025 22:48

Still very warm in Cambridgeshire, it's a bit more bearable than 34° obviously, but still in no way autumnal.
I would love some drizzle!

the80sweregreat · 30/07/2025 06:50

God, please not anymore heatwaves! .. hopefully it’ll be a few days and a thunderstorm and disappear.

ExponentialDelivery · 30/07/2025 06:58

I agree we need more rain, I am worried about the effects of this prolonged dry weather, we have had the odd torrential downpour but that just runs off, we need regular sustained rain. I am in the garden now having just done half an hour pottering before work and it does feel autumnal, I've been picking blackberries for about three weeks, it is really dewy. I am dreading the onset of short days I love my early morning and late evening gardening sessions and hate it when it's dark apart from when I'm at work, so depressing (no thanks to snuggling on the sofa with a hot chocolate).

Ilovemyshed · 30/07/2025 09:46

Gorgeous here, bright, sunny, blue skies and a bit of an autumnal nip in the air. Grass has greened up again after dying in the heatwaves. Long may it continue.

Gorgeous evening yesterday and I sat in the garden from about 4.30 am with a coffee and wrapped up in a blanket. Heaven!

Comedycook · 30/07/2025 09:49

Its incredibly grey here in London this morning...not a hint of blue sky

Not too bad here today (Cambridgeshire) but it felt distinctly autumnal early in morning about a week or so ago. Am hoping for a few more weeks of sun & warmth at least.

I'm also in East Anglia. It's not gone below 21 which we'd have considered the top temp a few years ago. Humidity is the main problem here and the hayfever has been a whole new all time high of itchy eyes this year.

IDontHateRainbows · 30/07/2025 10:28

We are nearly at the pagan time of lammas which marks a new season, these changes in season/ energy are thought to represent the mid way point between the solstice and equinox and its true the feel/ energy/ light does seem to change around these times( the others are end of april/ oct/ jan) so maybe they were on to something!

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 30/07/2025 18:47

There's definitely been a change in the weather, it was also dark when I was rudely woken up by the cat at 4am this morning, and it hasn't been for a while. It's also getting darker earlier again. But there's a kind of late summer feeling to the weather (hope that makes sense).

We're still a long way off the cold, dark nights of winter but I definitely think the glorious sunshine and 30c+ heat of early July are a not to distant memory.

I absolutely love the hot sunny weather, bright blue skies, not a cloud to be seen. I know what I put on in the morning will be fine all day.

I hate this grey, cloudy, can't make up It's mind weather. It's like Crowded House sang, 4 seasons in one day.

anyzee · 30/07/2025 19:17

Oh come one folks. It is the end of July FGS and not unusual for some grey drizzly wet days around now. August is patchy too with blistering heat one week and deluges the next. It's our climate and I never bank on anything to do with the Summer weather!

Autumn is not drawing in. It is just the dreary drizzle that is making us think so. If next week there is a heatwave, all thoughts of Autumn would be out the proverbial window.

Yes you can see the days getting a tad shorter, but we've a long way to go before the clocks go back.

Enjoy what we've got right now and the kids don't really care as long as they have something to do.

JenniferBooth · 30/07/2025 19:23

KateMiskin · 29/07/2025 20:20

I prefer this to the blistering heat.

its still too humid here

AutumnLover1989 · 31/07/2025 08:53

Definitely feels like we are approaching the 1st September and not 1st August.

broccolipizza · 31/07/2025 09:40

I think the temperatures are settling back at average following a series of heatwaves throughout June and July. This combined with the noticeably earlier nights gives the impression of the onset of autumn, but really we are only in mid-late summer. We are still weeks away from the equinox and 3 months from the end of BST. It’s normal to have warm, sunny weather right into September so I think summer has more in store for us. Summer to autumn is one of my favourite seasonal changes but I admit I’m not feeling it happen just yet.
