Can anyone recommend a really good quality dark chocolate?

I used to love the Montezuma dark chocolate buttons. They had a really rich flavour and smooth texture. Really good.

Now they have changed the recipe and they are horrible. Clearly using cheap ingredients.

Can anyone recommend an alternative? With no emulsifiers?

thank you

I like the Moser Roth 85% cocoa mini bars from Aldi.

I second this, they're lovely.

M&S 100% cocoa.

Look for single-origin beans, no soy lecithin and absolutely no vanilla flavouring (used to mask poor quality chocolate).

When I'm feeling flush, I order stuff from here: https://cocoarunners.com/. I like really dark chocolate (90% or higher) and like Willie's Cacao, Original Beans, Zotter, Pump Street.

When I'm less flush, I make do with Lindt 90%

Green and Blacks Organic…..

The J D Gross range from Lidl is excellent and does well in blind tastings. I think it comes in 70% and 85%, beautiful snap, delicious flavour, lovely smooth texture. There is a version with sea salt crystals as well if you like that kind of thing and it is sublime. Amazing value for money and easy to get hold of too. I know there are very high end chocolatiers making really fine stuff but for something as an every day treat I wouldn’t buy anything else.

That’s the one I was going to recommend! It’s a Ugandan chocolate and it’s smooth and delicious.

70% one is my favourite from Lidl.

Hotel Chocolat 70% dark is excellent but quite pricey. It has a hint of cherry to the taste

M&S have a posh bar. Can't remember the country. But it was dark and had notes of raspberry. It was to die for.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 29/07/2025 19:19

Oh no I loved the Montezuma Buttons when I could get them, the milk ones though! Have you tried Tony’s Dark? Blue Wrapper

BigSkies2022 · 29/07/2025 19:24

Waitrose No 1 dark chocolate- I think it’s 90%, or maybe 85% cocoa solids. Anyway it’s lovely. I also like the Sainsburys Ugandan 90% cocoa solids.

Waitrose dark chocolate is lovely.
