Here's the link: Free to watch on youtube

Run time 1h35m

I've watched it a few times over the years. It's just one of those films that, i don't know really but maybe we could chat about? I'll take the lead from others.

I think I'm going to have to bump this a bit because it's a 1975 documentary about the aunt and female cousin of Jacqueline (Jackie) Bouvier/Kennedy/Onassis living in a very eccentric state in a tumbledown house

They are mother and daughter. Trust me, it's really compelling, for all you young'uns out there that weren't even born yet etc.

Yes I love it, my friends and I used to be obsessed with Grey Gardens.

Redheadedstepchild · 26/07/2025 07:17

Maybe we can introduce it to a new generation?

Yes and also the movie version with Drew Barrymore and Jessica Laing, it's fab. There is also a Broadway musical.

Custark · 26/07/2025 08:14

It’s great, but I’ve not seen it for many years. I’ll give it a rewatch.

CarpeVitam · 26/07/2025 09:25

Sounds interesting! Thanks OP.

efeslight · 26/07/2025 10:23

Sounds good, thanks

Thank you, I'd never heard of this.

I have started watching it and I'm halfway through and I love it.

It reminds me of a few mother daughter relationships in my age group. Especially that they hold simultaneous conversations but still can keep track of what the other is talking about - even though they are often talking at the same time 😊

soupyspoon · 26/07/2025 13:39

Yes saw it some years ago. Mesmerising

Redheadedstepchild · 26/07/2025 17:22

Just for anybody who's wondering, (because I did) the reason why Little Edie always wears a head scarf is because she suffered from alopecia.

I know that might be obvious to some people and maybe I'm being insensitive to point it out but I was a bit confused when I first watched it. I thought it might have been for religious reasons.

If only it was just a head scarf, Little Edie also wore sweaters, shirts and pants on her head. But I do love the original movie, always thought it was sad Jackie had to be shamed into helping them.

Not quite off-topic, but have you watched this? 😂

Grey Gardens. Have you seen this documentary?
VivienneDelacroix · 26/07/2025 17:56

I love Grey Gardens.

Squirrelsnut · 26/07/2025 17:58

I've watched it. It's sad, unsettling and dreamlike.
Apparently Drew Barrymore is excellent as Little Edie in the film.

Redheadedstepchild · 26/07/2025 18:21

I've been wikipedia-ing about, as I do and the whole, "Grey Gardens" story is very interesting:

The Beales sold the property to Benjamin Crowninshield Bradlee in 1979. He was something to do with Watergate, the Pentagon papers and so and so forth.

His third wife, Sally Quinn was the daughter of General William Wilson "Buffalo Bill" involved in WW2, capture of Hermann Goring, OSS, CIA, all that kinds of stuff.

His second wife was Antoinette Pinchot, sister of mistress of JFK...

I think the first wife, Jean Saltonstall got out out before it all went too crackers

Very tangled history there. Poor old house.

Bradlee was the editor of The Washington Post during Watergate (employing Woodward and Bernstein). He was played by Jason Robards in “All the President’s Men”.

I love Grey Gardens!! Thanks OP, I might watch it tonight. Have you seen The Beales Of Grey Gardens, made up of additional footage? I’m not sure if it’s still available, I saw it on a limited release about a decade ago.

I had no idea of this. I just watched it thinking that they were two rather embarrassing relatives on Jackie's side. The whole Kennedy/Bouvier backstory is fascinating.

Strange people doing strange things

I haven't seen the film with Drew Barrymore, who herself came from quite a disrupted childhood.

I might watch it soon but I have to look after my tear ducts. I have a feeling that it's the sort of film to get me crying.

Oh you can't hijack my thread! The more the merrier! I'm absolutely up to the gills with old tv programmes. My thread on early Mary Berry and Judith Chalmers is here:

Grey Gardens is in a bit of a different league though. Have a lovely shower and settle down to either Mary and Judith with their freezer or Big Edie and Little Edie with their quite different 1970's housekeeping choices.

Who's to judge?

Just thought I would let you all know: (Run time 6m39s) So many useful tips! You just have to watch it. I can't explain.

I never heard of this. I’m looking for something to watch so will give a try. Thank you x

Jacqueline Kennedy's grandson, Jack Schlossberg, has an Instagram account. Some of his posts demonstrate that he takes after that side of the family!
