New car: petrol or hybrid

I want to get a new car. I am thinking of a toyota yaris or yaris cross.

What are your experiences of hybrids? Worth it? Might as well get a full electric? Or go for a cheaper equivalent petrol car?

I intend that this car will last us a decade.

I have a Yaris hybrid, had it several years and had a petrol yaris before that. I get a third more miles for the same amount of petrol and its auto but other than that no real difference. Full electric or not depends on so many other factors.

Thanks for that! Your experience is that it is more economically with the fuel. Good to hear!

I had a Yaris hybrid, lovely to drive and I only got rid as my job changed and I wasn’t driving much at all so didn’t need a car.

I have driven the yaris a few times (car share). Very happy with it. I am concerned that it is a bit small. The modern ford fiesta or golf is the size that works for us as a family.

That is why I was wondering about the yaris cross which larger, or sticking with what I know works: fiesta or golf.

But honestly 95% of the driving is only me to work/supermarket or dd in the front. So, we could suck up the smaller yaris.

We’ve just got a plug in Toyota hybrid. On the garage forecourt, there was an all electric big Toyota. New, it’s upwards of 40k. Second hand at a year old they’re asking 23k.

I’ve posted about this on another thread but I love my hybrid (not the Yaris)

I do most of my day to day miles on the battery. It’s simple to charge overnight with a 3 pin plug. I’ve only filled up once since April yet I’ve done over 2500 miles. It’s quick, silent on the electric engine and so cheap.

If you are going hybrid, then go with the ones who started hybrids before the rest of the trash from Europe.

Toyota and Honda.

Look at anything else at your peril!

Thanks all! This is so useful.

How do hondas compare with Toyotas?

I love my Yaris hybrid. Definitely more efficient than petrol only.

I would love to go electric but don't have the confidence yet that it would be easy to recharge on long journeys when needed.
