Has anyone else experienced this? Surely it's a no-no to give out your passport number?

Thanks for any advice/experience

Absolutely wouldn’t do this
sounds well dodgy

MissPeachyKeen · 24/07/2025 12:12

That's ridiculous. Cancel and get a refund (if you can!)

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 24/07/2025 12:14

Where have you ordered from? Sounds like a know your customer anti money-laundering check. If you only share the passport number, what do you think they will do with that?

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 24/07/2025 12:14

Nope. Absolutely not. Don't do it.

BillStickersWillBeProsocuted · 24/07/2025 12:18

Can't you just say you don't have a passport?

BeltaLodaLife · 24/07/2025 12:19

What have you ordered and where from? Is it very high value or something?

Super odd. I would just tell them that I don’t have a passport.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 24/07/2025 12:25

I work in corporate governance and frequently need to deal with KYC and AML requests. Impossible to say whether the OP should provide the number or not as we don't have sufficient information from her. Always worth checking any request for ID is actually from who it purports to be from. A blanket "don't do it!" response may not be appropriate.

ililili · 24/07/2025 12:27

It's not high value or anything

I've written back saying can they post without please?

I have never heard of anyone being asked for their passport number in connection with an online purchase.
However, as a PP suggested there may be something to do with AML/KYC where certain combinations of residence/nationality/place of birth are not allowed.

slightlydistrac · 24/07/2025 16:27

What have you bought?

Shegotanology · 24/07/2025 16:34

It can be used to steal your ID.

MischiefandMayhemManaged · 24/07/2025 16:43

Sounds scammy! anyway they'd be shit out of luck with me! My passport is currently expired - and as i have no spare cash to go out of the uk on holiiday have no intention of renewing it in the near future!

I'd cancel the order and try and find it somehwere else!!!!
