Pocket watch for a teenager...?

DS is 15 soon and, obviously, has asked for a pocket watch Hmm

I know nothing about such things. I don't want to get a shite chrome plated one that will last 5 minutes but I also don't want to spend loads of money because he is liable to lose or break it (ASD/ADHD/dyspraxia). I think he'd prefer a fairly heavy one, second hand/vintage would be fine.

Where does one buy such things? We don't have much in the way of shops here so ideally online but buying vintage watches online seems like a recipe for being ripped off!

Check Vinted for vintage, ebay too. I think places like H Samuel still sell them.

They're really popular for steampunk cosplay. Go onto Etsy and search for 'steampunk pocket watch' and you'll find loads at a reasonable price.

I actually collect vintage watches, but wouldn't really recommend a vintage pocket watch unless you're willing to pay every few years to get it serviced (not cheap, unfortunately!).

Thanks, I did have a look but they all look like the same ones as on Temu etc but with a hefty markup, and I can't tell the decent ones from the crap ones (price doesn't seem to be an indicator!).

What’s your budget? Something like https://www.hsamuel.co.uk/mens-chrome-pocket-watch/p/V-3374475 with a decent warranty would be my choice. Avoid Temu etc.

My son has a Zelda breath of the wild pocket watch. I think it was about £15.
