Caitlin Moran and the Post Holiday Big Wash

Yesterday in the Sunday Times, Caitlin Moran wrote “…….But without exception, every woman I know over the age of 40 confesses that one of their favourite moments of a holiday is getting home, kicking all the accumulated post out of the way, and putting all the holiday clothes on a mixed load…..”

Count me out Smile

The washing isn't so bad, if the weather is good and you can get a couple of loads out each day. I spent about 3 hours yesterday ironing all the accumulated holiday washing though, that wasn't so fun.

IkaBaar · 21/07/2025 12:59

What, it’s the worst part of going away!

SweetFancyMoses · 21/07/2025 12:59

Count me out too. It’d sit in the cases for a month if it was down to me! My husband is the manager of laundry here.

MintTwirl · 21/07/2025 13:01

My husband is the one who puts the post holiday wash on. I prefer to get home and have a cuppa first.

LindorDoubleChoc · 21/07/2025 13:06

We self cater in villas and do the washing before we get home. All that lovely summer sun to dry the clothes in. I don't relish it or get excited about it though, that's rather lame!

Blackcordoroys · 21/07/2025 13:11

I do actually hugely enjoy laundry. Hanging it all out, sorting, making it all neat. When it’s sunny I’m casting about the house for things to wash (dressing gowns, sofa cushion covers). I’m tragic

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 21/07/2025 13:12

Surely the best part of getting home after a holiday is sleeping in your own bed?

I'm with you. I love a good drying day and roam the house looking for things to wash 🙂

KentuckyFriedPigeon · 21/07/2025 13:15

What? No.

BitOutOfPractice · 21/07/2025 13:15

I’m out too. That’s a rather regressive and outdated Notion isn’t it, that all women enjoy household chores and are responsible for household chores. Nope, not in my house.

I agree.
I hate all the washing when we get back, all that sorting, washing, drying and ironing.
It seems to go on longer than the holiday 😂

Well at least she’s moved on from the ‘oh I’m slightly bonkers, me’ shit

BlinkyBlank · 21/07/2025 13:32

No absolutely not, I have no interest in that whatsoever. I would happily pay money for a suitcase emptying service. DH on the other hand….

ThePoshUns · 21/07/2025 13:33

Oh god no that’s the worst bit about coming back from holiday, especially if it’s pissing it down which it normally is.

HermioneWeasley · 21/07/2025 13:34

Wow, she’s given up any pretence of feminism, she?

I haven’t read her column for years - she sat out the gender wars, claiming to be a feminist while rapists were housed in women’s prisons, while braver women took the hits, abuse and cancellation. She’s a coward and I find I am not interested in her opinion on anything as a result.

SoManyDandelions · 21/07/2025 13:35

Is she not being sarcastic?!

I don't mind doing laundry but HATE the post-holiday washing and ironing!

JoyousGuide · 21/07/2025 13:36

I always budget in my holiday fund for taking all the laundry to the laundrette when we get home. It is my reward to myself for a family holiday and means that all I have to do is put the lovely dry folded washing away.

Brefugee · 21/07/2025 13:36

she is a daft twit and just tries to entertain, with decreasing success.

Best just not read her articles

(FWIW: I love doing laundry, ironing, folding and putting away. But that's just me being weird)

Same. Used to love her columns but she’s a cowardly old bint.

TheyreLikeUsButRichAndThin · 21/07/2025 13:37

Bit of a shit holiday if that’s your fave part of it! Depressing.

^ this.

Peridot1 · 21/07/2025 13:43

Well it’s definitely not my favourite part of the holiday but as a process I quite enjoy it. I’ll admit that’s quite sad! I make sure all the dirty washing is in one case and the clean unworn stuff is together and I do it all in stages.

I do quite enjoy doing laundry etc. The rest of the house is a bit untidy etc but I keep on top of the laundry. If that starts to build up I feel a bit out of control generally.

DH does most of the cooking and organising supermarket deliveries etc. I do the laundry.

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 21/07/2025 13:46

If that's her favourite part, she's doing holidays wrong.

BashfulClam · 21/07/2025 13:48

It’s not my favourite part but it is one of the first things we do as we empty our cases the minute we get home or we’d just ignore them for a month. I don’t iron so at least I don’t have to do that part of it all.

largeprintagathachristie · 21/07/2025 13:52

I have the Times app on a special offer - forgetting that she had a column. I already found her annoying and the there was that column, with the inference that all menopausal women are all getting off on doing the post-holiday laundry.

Her books on feminism seemed to imply she’d invented it (despite being notably absent in using her profile to advocate for women).

Also avoiding Giles Coren.
Do like Hadley Freeman.
