Do you have any favourite painters?

I love Caravaggio, Vermeer, Monet, Pissarro, etc. I also love people like Lord Leighton and Waterhouse. But my knowledge of painting stops in about 1900. I know virtually nothing about 20th or 21st century painters and never studied art (to my bitter regret). Could anyone recommend a modern painter?

Jackson Pollock, Rothko. Another vote for Anselm Kiefer also, exhibition on at the moment.

Olly and Suzi I came across because I like Blur Blush Wasn’t expecting to like their work because I’m not an animal person but it’s intriguing.

I saw a wonderful exhibition by Alex Katz at the Albertina in Vienna a few years ago. He’s 97 but I think considered relatively modern.

I came to say Eric Ravilious. Worked between the wars, then was a war artist who was killed on active service.

Waterstones have a 2026 calendar of his work which I shall be buying when it's published.

I know I have other favourites but have not yet had tea, am hungry and brain not working!

Oh, just thought - have a look for the work of the East London Group, also mostly between the wars.

Alice Neel is so great - her work but also her as a person / way of being.

Oldernotwizer · 18/07/2025 19:27

Gustav Klimt is my all time favourite.
Georgia Okeefe is amazing too.

pitterypattery00 · 18/07/2025 19:28

I love the colours and landscapes of Pam Carter and John Lowrie Morrison (known as JoLoMo) - 2 Scottish painters.

Conversely, there is something about the dark, flat skies of Ron Lawson that really appeals to me.

BestIsWest · 18/07/2025 19:30

Sonia Delaunay.

I saw the Anselm Kiefer exhibition in Amsterdam recently. Stupendous works.
Gerhard Richter
Andrew Wyeth
David Hockney

There’s a Google Arts & Culture app you might like - tells you about the paintings, where they’re housed and links to similar (‘if you like this you might like….’)
