Best wasp deterrent for eating outside

They’ve been driving me mad! It’s so warm and lovely to have the opportunity to eat in the garden, but not at the peril of wasps.
What is the most effective deterrent ? thanks

A friend once put an open jar of jam or honey (can’t remember which) a few metres away from us – all the wasps flocked over there and left us alone.
