TTC again and just not happening!

DH and I have been trying to conceive DC2 for ten months. I came on this morning so another month gone now. I don’t know why it’s just not working.

DC1 was conceived in the first month of trying. In fact we barely even tried. I am 34, no longer breastfeeding, periods been back to normal for over a year. No health issues. We have sex regularly and after a couple of unsuccessful months of just DTD whenever we started to take more notice of my ovulation times.

Since then we have been doing more and more of the things they say help. These have included:

  • DH abstaining from ejaculation for three days before my fertile time
  • Me having my orgasm after his
  • Pregnancy lube
  • Lying like an idiot with my legs in the air after DTD.
  • DTD loads when I’m ovulating. I’m talking twice a day.

And still nothing! I am reluctant to waste the GP’s time because clearly we are both capable of making a baby together. But at what point do I have to think about that? Has anyone encountered this, or knows the secret?!

I’m guessing you are certain of ovulation time? If he is abstaining for 3 days before fertile time are you deff not waiting too long?

As certain as I can be!

We have only been at three days abstention for the last few months. Before then it was less time than that normally. We have sex a fair bit and he masturbates as well sometimes so it’s rarely that long unless now we are doing it on purpose for this reason.

How old were you when you had your first baby?

Are you using OPKs? Have a look at the Ava watch as well (worked for me for tracking and making sure OPK was accurate) also I think acupuncture helped. I had sessions before and after ovulation- if you see a DCM they can advise. I also took CoQ10 supplements. Do some research on possible ways to make sure you’re hitting the right times and also anything that can boost fertility. I’d suggest eating healthy etc too.

Agree with testing for ovulation if you aren’t already, and try SMEP.

As an aside though even for perfectly healthy couples at 34 having sex at exactly the right time, the chance of conceiving each month is around 20%. That’s even if everything is perfect, so it unfortunately can just take time. TTC is also one of those awful things where every month your chance resets back to zero, you’re no more likely to conceive in month 12 than in month 1, it’s a real mental battle so please do take care of yourself. Good luck

Thanks. Yes i have been using OPKs recently. My diet is always good and have been taking supplements too. Honestly I feel like I’m doing everything from science to old wives tales! I guess I’ve just not been lucky so far.

Yes it is just a case of rolling dice. We had the opposite experience that it took about 15months to conceive DC1 and literally the first time we didn’t use protection with DC2. You can maximise your chances and the rest is luck.
