ADVICE - DS sliced top of thumb, stopped bleeding, just keep it covered?

DS just sliced top of his thumb whilst cooking. Said it's not bleeding as much now but said a 'flap' off skin is hanging off.
Asking whether he should pull it off, Ive said no and bandage up so it knits back.

Hoping Im right. Any advice???

Ive told him to take paracetomol if painful. He's at GF so I cant see how bad it is. I think if it was still bleeding a lot, I'd tell him to get medical attention but bleeding seems to have stopped alot.

Clean and bandage, check it tomorrow and then re bandage it. If it is very oozy then it might need checking for stitches. If it has stopped bleeding and he has good sensation it should just heal.

Is it just a flap of skin? If so, clean it, pat it back down and strap it up to let it knit.

if it is more than just a flap of skin it may need stitching.

Thank you for advice both of you. He says a flap of skin

Flap is fine, clean and bandage it.

Rainbows41 · 15/07/2025 22:26

How big is the flap of skin and how deep?
How old is he?
Has it stopped bleeding?

I've done my thumb (meat chopper) and middle finger (mandolin) and just stuck it down and bandaged it up. Sore as hell for a few days, but healed up - fingerprints not quite the same though. Good rinse and tight bandage should be OK.

I did my finger when a knife slipped while cooking. It was a flap of skin deeper than any of my other cuts. I bandaged and when the bleeding stopped tried to not panic. It did heal fine. It bled lots though.

Depends if still bleeding and how deep the cut. I did the corner of my thumb and went through the nail with a mandolin. I was alone in the house so tricky to bandage alone. Needed to use a bobble as a tourniquet. In hindsight, I probably needed stitches and I've lost some feeling in my thumb. He needs to bandage it and keep it clean. It will knit together again if a relatively superficial cut.

Definitely don't pull it off!!! Not least cause it will hurt 100x more if he does!

My daughter did that on the edge of a tin. Minor injury dept glued it together. It was very bad. Steri strips might work.

I’ve had a good go at chopping off three fingertips. Each time I’ve steristripped them back down and they’ve healed. They don’t necessarily have the same sensation as before, and all have scars. The worst one left me still finding blood in my kitchen drawers two weeks later.
