Clothes you wish you'd kept

If there's already a thread on this then oops but seeing white gypsy style skirts on so many women made me think I wish I'd kept mine from all those years ago. Then there are the little quilted patterned jackets. I had one! Not buying them again but we can't keep everything that's gone out of style in the hope decades later it's back in! There isn't a wardrobe or room big enough 🙄

Anyone else?

Kate Moss at Topshop dress. Was a beautiful flattering green dress, perfect for weddings

@CraftyNavySeal

We can't be the only ones 🙄

I’m old enough to have had a couple of Mary Quant items. ☹️

Me too. I remember putting a lovely dress in a charity bag. 😮

A beautiful jacket that tied with a big bow at the front. My sis persuaded me that I had it too long . I still sigh after it.

tartyflette · 14/07/2025 17:20

I had a most beautiful dress from Way In at Harrods (its in-store boutique in the 70s). It was a designer name which I have unfortunately forgotten but it was a full length, form fitting halter neck dress in a dusty pink cotton voile and it looked sensational on.
Unfortunately I outgrew it by several sizes and it was discarded some years later, although I can't remember exactly how or when. 😥

hoarahloux · 14/07/2025 18:10

Aw, my graduation dress. It was a 50s style red polka dot dress from a local designer, long out of business. No, I'll likely never be a size 12 again, but I do wish I hadn't charity shopped it.

A long black sleeveless jersey cross back dress from Miss Selfridge in 1987.
It was my most successful ever pulling outfit.
I wouldn’t wear it now without covering the bingo wings but I still think about it often.

Comefromaway · 14/07/2025 18:17

I had to throw my white gypsy skirt away last year as it was in tatters & I’m struggling to replace it. Everything either swamps me or isn’t cotton/durable.

The only other things I wish I’d kept are my old football shirts.

Rainbow striped Red or Dead shoes, they were THE shoe in the early 00’s and I wore them constantly.
lovely soft leather cowboy boots from Macy’s in NYC, gave them to a (now distant) friend and she was so happy, I can’t be too mad about that.
radley bag and matching purse, really classic timeless black leather.
i do find myself keeping more now just in case, much to Dh’s dismay!

I had those red or dead shoes too. They were the in shoe weren’t they! Loved them so much, god knows what happened to them. Probably going for a bomb on eBay!

Devilsmommy · 14/07/2025 18:22

I had 2 vintage 70's Adidas jackets which I absolutely loved. Still can't understand why I got rid of them 😭

Brendahollowayreconsider · 14/07/2025 19:58

My boating blazer from an Edinburgh tailors costing £36 in mid 82... literally a small fortune 🥠

Obviously went straight to Vinted, there’s a pair in my size for £10!

Thanks for the responses. 👗🧥👕👖🥼👜

I had a 3/4 length navy blue pvc coat which may sound awful but it got me many compliments. I wore it every winter for years and loved it. Eventually I got rid as imagined people were saying 'not that coat again'

Thirty odd years ago and I still miss it 🙄

My DM boots from the 90s, I had 2 pairs - black and navy.
Also a beautiful purple velvet jacket from top shop

Tooty78 · 14/07/2025 20:41

I bought an Ossie Clarke 40's inspired maxI dress for a Midsummer Ball back in 1976. It was made of moss crepe in a dark apricot colour. Deep cuffs and shoulder pads, it hung beautifully and I could well imagine Joan Crawford strutting about in it.

I decided to have it shortened to midaxi length to get more wear out of it, and it still looked beautiful. My sil asked to borrow it........and I never saw it again as it was 'lost' in their house move.

I still mourn its loss all these years later, wish I had had my photo taken in it.

Jorvik1978 · 14/07/2025 21:11

The vintage black leather A-line knee length skirt that fit me like a glove.... I regret giving that away, much more than my wedding dress which, whilst lovely, I was never going to wear again and it would just take up valuable wardrobe space.

GellerYeller · 14/07/2025 21:19

I had the Shelleys version of those rainbow shoes!
My yellow Snoopy timex watch that had a tennis ball instead of a second hand!
A Miss Selfridge bottle green velvet Barbour style jacket with satin quilted sleeves.
From the same era, a Sue Rowe black twill mini that had brushed brass poppers down the whole of one side.
A beautiful French Connection cream wool high neck jumper with buttons that opened into vents at the hem.

I’ve no memory of getting rid of any of it. Not that I’d be able to carry any of it off now.

madaboutpurple · 14/07/2025 21:27

A friend gave me a red Biba dress when I was a teenager which I really liked. When I grew out of it Mum suggested giving it to my cousin .I wish now I had kept it.

crazeekat · 14/07/2025 21:30

Haha I was looking at all the gypsy skirts today and thinking god I had loads of them back in the nineties/ noughties

HaggardyOldSkin · 15/07/2025 03:46

I had an amazing Ossie Clarke Celia Birtwell dress that was my mums in the 70s. Just googled and found one selling for £700 plus on eBay. I don’t remember the Red or Dead shoes though!

Wellfuckme · 15/07/2025 18:14

Red velvet bardot style mini dress - made me feel like a goddess. Turned more than a few heads when I wore it 😉

I often think fondly of that dress and all the good times I had in it.

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 15/07/2025 18:17

A floaty psychedelic patterned jumpsuit. It was so comfortable and I had so much fun in it.

Davros · 15/07/2025 18:26

All the shoes I ever had but especially the two pairs of Terry Dehavilland high heels with peep toes. All the Biba gear me and my sisters had in the 70s. I’ve still got one Biba dress left, a halterneck polka dot number. I’ve still got a good amount of my clothes from the 80s. I sold my punk, mostly Vivienne Westwood, clothes which I wore a lot. I needed the money 😢 I kept my Anarchy and tits T-shirts
