Questions about cows

Yesterday, I drove past the same field of cows 4 times in an hour and I have some questions that have been puzzling me, if anyone can help?

  1. The weather was very, very hot. Full sun. Every time I went past, the cows were standing huddled together in a group in different places in the field. There was no shade in the field (although there might be in other parts, I couldn't see the whole area). Do cows like the sun? Do they get sunstroke/burn? Was the huddling together due to the sun?

  2. There was always one cow who wasn't in the group, but standing a few metres away. Was she an outcast? A rebel? The head cow?

  3. Many years ago, when I was a student, I was camping in the middle of the countryside next to an archaeological dig I was working on. The was a field of cows next to our campsite. Every night, in the middle of the night the cows would all suddenly thunder down the field to the fence by my tent, all moo really loudly then thunder back up the field again. They would do this at several points during the night. What in earth were they doing????

I really like cows.😁

I love cows.My cousin sent me this photo last week from her farm. The calf is just 2 hours old.

The other photo is the mum the day prior to the birth with one of her companions also waiting to give birth.

Personally I think everyone just just upload cow photos. And ginger cats too, if they want.

I don't have a cow or a ginger cat, but I will try to get a photo of the herd this week.

I’ll have to wait a few more months. The farmer brings cows for overwintering in the field next to us. No idea where there are before that. I might go on a scouting mission to find out though.

I would pass that on but his not ginger 'brother from another mother' would get jealous!

Aw, they are gorgeous 😍.
Different colour to mum, though. What colour was the father?

I checked with my cousin and it wasn’t their bull. It was artificial insemination. A man in a van with a container of dry ice transporting the bull sperm. Always referred to as the A.I man long before artificial intelligence was invented !

MotherOfCatBoy · 16/08/2025 07:03

Is it fun for them, does anyone know? For cats I believe the female doesn’t have a great time. Do cows enjoy it when they get frisky?

IAmNotASheep · 16/08/2025 15:30

Can’t believe this thread has led to me googling. Do cows enjoy sex 🙂‍↕️😗

Annnyyy way. This article states
Males and females do select mates, so they do chose a mate they fancy. If there’s more than one bull females will be party to choosing their favourite and seek out sex/ or at least impregnation
Males will tend to mate more with one or two favourites

Males do need stimulation and the rear end of a female provides that which is why dummy rear ends are used for semen extraction

but you know I feel
Ive probably done enough spying into a cows sex life for today 🤣

of note the article doesnt answer whether they really enjoy sex. Only Dr Doolittle could ask that

😂 well thank you @IAmNotASheep for sacrificing your search history! V interesting. Poor cows, I feel sorry for them because most of their calves are taken away eventually.

There’s a book The Secret Life of Cows that I read, that does talk about cow families and some matrilineal lines, written by a female farmer. Doesn’t talk about their sex lives though! I read it originally because we walk a lot and I’m scared to walk through fields with cows.

Walk with authority through a field of cows . Always with one eye on the ground though 😊

My grandad was a herdsman. So we grew up around lots of cows.
When we went to get water from the well they would ignore us on the way with our empty buckets. But on the way back with our now full buckets of water they’d saunter over to us ( with a whistle and a wink I’m sure ) and nudge us spilling all the water
And repeat
Oh how we laughed 🤨🤪

Moral of the story never carry buckets of water through a field of cows

Jitterybugs2 · 17/08/2025 17:08

I’ll continue to bore you with my love of cows. I took this pic on my morning walk today. I was sitting on a bench in the farm lane and these 3 strolled over from the other side of the field and put their heads over the wall to check me out.

I took a selfie with me sitting on the bench and the cows leaning their heads over the wall and sent it to my grandkids in case they need confirmation that I’ve lost the plot.

They look like my type of cows! Quietly interested and friendly 😁

Believe it or not, I have indeed applied sun screen to a cat's ears. We used to have a black and white cat whose fur on his ears was white with pale pink skin underneath, and he did get used to having it put on. Took a while though. Non-greasy sun screen is best.

But if you think I'm going to try applying the stuff to my current pale ginger tabby cat's pink lips and nose you have another think coming!

🤣
