Do you leave any windows open at night in east London

Just that really! I get a bit nervous about burglaries so tend to Shut them. Not ideal I know. Wondered on others thoughts

Not downstairs no. I’ve lived in East London for about 30 years and been burgled half a dozen times (usually by window being forced open) so wouldn’t risk it. I do leave bedroom windows open however.

ShamrockShenanigans · 12/07/2025 22:44

All the top windows, yes.

But then again I wouldn't leave ground floor windows open no matter where I lived.

StarDolphins · 12/07/2025 22:46

I don’t live in London, I live in the Peak District but I would only leave upstairs windows open.

youreactinglikeafunmum · 12/07/2025 22:47

Agree only upstairs x

Glitterheart · 12/07/2025 22:52

Once left my basement flat windows open on a hot night in Bethnal Green. Woke up to find a man climbing in through the window 😬

Givemethesun · 13/07/2025 00:05

Thanks everyone. Sorry I definitly only
meant upstairs anyway. Downstairs I assumed was just a no go so not worth even mentioning 😂 our upstairs would be quite easy to get in to due to a downstairs extension which is what makes me nervous even about upstairs. Burglaries here quite a lot

I used to leave the kitchen door to the gardem ooen at night until a fox ate all the cereals and tried to eat the bins….
i used to leave that same door open all day until last week a rat came in to shelter himself from the sun! He was out very quickly and now i am locking the door all the time.

Eastendboysandwestendgirls · 13/07/2025 00:13

Only my bedroom window which is at the front, I often get cats or foxes trying to get in from the back. If burglars are going to get in, they are very adept at just going through the front door in broad daylight (bitter experience).

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 13/07/2025 00:13

Better to buy a cooling unit of some kind.

CraftyNavySeal · 13/07/2025 00:18

No but because I live by the train tracks and get woken up in the morning. Bought a fan last week and loving it

Know what you mean about the noise too! I love London - just not enjoying this heat wave 😂

Thanks for the big shout out for those living in East London. Without it everyone would still be leaving all their downstairs windows open. The rest of the country, leaving your downstairs windows open is not a problem.

Only upstairs windows

TheNumberBlocks · 13/07/2025 01:51

Not east London but south but upstairs yes but on “child lock” so not fully open, I remember my mum leaving her windows open one night and a man climbed up the drain pipe!

Confused about the East London reference. You could live in Canary Wharf with private security guards or a terraced house in Bethnal Green.

Only you know your area and street.

Whether others do is irrelevant as it could be entirely different.

Similarly, I lived in Newcastle and had an attempt break in but never had in London.

Odd thread.

Sorry I didn’t specify my postcode. On balance east London has higher crime rates than other parts of the city - it’s fairly obvious that’s why I’m asking. I’m personally not interested in other areas of the country (or city tbh) or I’d have asked.

I am also aware that what others do is effectively irrelevant but that goes for most questions on this site. Ie people asking abouts other births, other children. It’s all irrelevant in reality as everyone and their lives are different. It is however interesting to see and hear other people’s views and what they do. Hence mine and most others questions on this site.

Thanks for letting me know about Newcastle though 😂😂

Yes I do the child lock too to try and let a tiny bit of air in. Gosh your poor mum!!! I think I’ll probs stick to the child lock tbf as that’s the risk I don’t want to take

No, it doesn't. Westminster does. Then Camden.
