My dd (14) had a blood test this morninf as she has been tired and pale. This evening i had a call from the hospital can i take her up right away so they can check her over. So we rush up there and they say she is anemic?
apparently ger heamglobin is 8 her iron is 2 and her folate is too low for them to measure.

they checked over her vital signs and told me to call the gp first thing.

i am so confused now is it urgent ir not! Is it really bad anemia? I dont know why i just had to rush out ib the middle of the night!

will she just need irob tablets?

They might refer for an iron infusion. 8 is pretty low mines was 6.8 ferritin also 2 and they gave me a blood transfusion to get hb up and then an iron infusion to boost ferritin.

Also testing to find out why / rule out any bleeding so endoscopy/ colonoscopy and a ct scan.

For both iron and folate to be low, the most common cause in kids is a beige diet, the second most common is a malabsorption problem. If the former, she’d probably respond very well to oral supplements, if not then may need some gut investigations.

She has a pretty good diet i think? My older daighter has low folate she took a 4 month course they retested but it was still only 2 so shes now in the middle of another course.

I was diagnosed with anaemia at a similar age. Was just getting over a cold, but went to my part-time job in the village shop on the Saturday morning. Got home just after 1pm, slept until my DM woke me at about 8pm with a sandwich. Fell asleep immediately afterwards and slept right through until DM woke me again on the Sunday with something to eat. Fell back to sleep immediately afterwards.

DM called the doctor on the Monday morning and he arrived after morning surgery. He took one look at me and prescribed iron medicine which I took for a while until DM complained about it staining her kitchen table lol, so then I went onto iron tablets. Took them for quite a while, but was eventually able to come off them. I have always linked the anaemia to puberty/starting my periods.

i contacted the gp so im assuming they will just give iron tablets or iron and folate?

The iron issue could easily be down to heavy periods, so if that's the case they may be looking for causes and/or solutions like going on the pill.

If your other DD also has a folate issue, there may be a common factor that needs exploring.

She doesnt have heavy periods i dont think at least i wouldnt class it as heavy no flooding only bleeds 4/5 days etc. the gp said they will call within 48 hours not sure why i had to rush up to the hospital in the night but now its fine to wait two days - i think im grumpy from lack of sleep .

did i mention that last night my younger kids were also having a sleepover party in the midst of all this !
