What is happening to my hair :(

Over the past (I’d say) 2 months, I’ve experienced sudden and extreme hair loss. Not just a bit of shedding.. I’m talking clumps coming out in the shower, in the hairbrush and even a fair few strands each time I touch my hair or remove a hair tie etc.

I dread washing it because I can feel all the hair stuck to my body, it’s just awful.

There are no bald patches, it seems to be shedding all over and if you look closely enough you can tell it is really thinning (although not hard to guess with the amount that is falling out!).

It isn’t just the hair loss though.. it’s the texture too. It’s like it happened overnight?! One minute I was able to style it and all was fine, the next it was falling out galore and it feels all wirey, incredibly dry and almost stuck together?!

I’ve only ever experienced the hair loss part once and that was post partum after my first child. My youngest is over 2 years old now so I’m definitely not putting this down to post partum.

I have never dyed my hair, always use hest protecter and only use the dyson airwrap to style. I don’t feel as though I use a crazy amount of heat or products.

Had bloods done a couple of months ago for a different reason, showed I was low on (but not dangerously low) folate & iron and I am now taking supplements for both.

Any ideas?! It’s making me panic and I’m so down about it…

Also.. I get it regularly trimmed and last trim was about a month ago.

You need to see GP and get your blood checked again

TimeForSomething · 09/07/2025 10:30

Did they check b12 specifically?

Yes b12 was all fine, iron low but not anemic and I’ve been taking the supplements for about a month.

@Yogabearmous I was thinking to call and ask if there is ANYTHING on the results that would cause the hair loss.. I’ll ring in the morning and check with them

Ask them what the level was, I say this because when I was found to have b12 in my boots, my hair was rank, falling out, stopped growing

Luanaa · 09/07/2025 10:40

Thank you. I might be able to access the results on the app.. if so I’ll upload it!

I had this exact same thing (except for the texture thing). I used to dread going in the shower too. It was just huge clumps. I asked my hair dresser and she said not to worry, it's probably hormonal (I thought it was a recent change in my shampoo). Then I did a search on here and interestingly it seemed that some people who had Covid/were ill went onto have this hair loss 2-3 months after the illness. Sure enough, I was ill 2 months before mine started.

Mine started in April and it's only just stopping now! I read others who said it takes 3-6 months but it should grow back.

calamin · 09/07/2025 10:49

Google telegon effluvium. Did you have an illness or any stress on your body in the past 3-6 months?
it should stop shedding and grow back.

Were your thyroid levels checked in your bloods? My DD struggles with hair loss as a result of low thyroid and the meds. It also grows back a funny texture.

Were you ill in the last few months? I had similar hair loss when taking steroids for a kidney issue.

CappyHamper · 09/07/2025 10:53

This is happening to me too and just seems impossible to get to the bottom of

TallulahBetty · 09/07/2025 10:55

How old are you? Happening to me, bloods all fine - have put it down to perimenopause. GPs are very uninterested
