Meat paste…did you use butter too?

I was just scrolling Facebook and saw a picture of beef paste which took me back to the shitty sandwiches my mother used to make me eat back in the late 1980s. I got to thinking, was it normal to put butter/margarine on the bread before the meat paste? I think of if I were to make a sandwich now I wouldn’t use butter as well but I definitely was told to make them that way back then. Just seeing the image earlier made me almost taste the yucky mush!

Yes to butter first. My parents used to love a potted meat sandwich!

DappledThings · 07/07/2025 20:17

I put margarine or butter on bread and toast under all other toppings. So that would include meat paste.

Pineapplewaves · 07/07/2025 20:24

Myself and DS love beef paste - if I’m making his sandwiches for school I butter the bread first. I eat it on toast without butter though.

God, I remember them from dos in the village hall, yes butter first, utterly rancid.

My parents would never have made such a thing, thank god.

DollopOfFun · 07/07/2025 20:29

Yes to butter. My favourite filthy snack is two slices cheap soft white bread, thick layer of butter, thinnish layer of sardine and tomato paste. It's a snack now, back in the day it was called 'tea', cos we were skint 😂would have been margarine back then of course.

AllPlayedOut · 07/07/2025 20:38

Yes always butter.

Beryls · 07/07/2025 20:39

Definitely needs butter as well. I often eat it! Probably because I ate it growing up A LOT. M&S chicken paste is lovely!

ClawsandEffect · 07/07/2025 20:40

Crab paste is gorg! No butter tho.

onehorserace · 07/07/2025 20:42

Toast and butter!

BCBird · 07/07/2025 20:42

coxesorangepippin · 07/07/2025 20:44

ReightYorkshire · 07/07/2025 20:54

Meat paste were a luxury for Christmas - with t'sprig of 'olly in it. (If Dada could get some from Corporation Cemetery on t'way to our 'ouse from t'pit.)

Nooo I was going to say sardine paste!

It stank.

No we didn't have butter or marg first, just straight on with the offender.

TheBig50 · 07/07/2025 21:02

The tubs of marg were massive and we'd have to take our stinky packed lunch in them when Mum had washed them out.

I love reminiscing with my brother about these things. Other kids had proper packed lunch boxes. Our crisps were just in a white packet with the flavour written on 🤣

simsbustinoutmimi · 07/07/2025 21:03

No. Fatty/greasy enough without butter.

RachelsPeeves · 07/07/2025 21:03

Yes to butter, still love a salmon paste sandwich. Sandwich Spread on the other hand is fit for the bin 🤢

Borborygmus · 07/07/2025 21:05

I've never made a sandwich in my life that didn't use butter/margarine.

soupyspoon · 07/07/2025 21:07

Always butter

Always butter no matter what the filling or topping and on both sides of the bread or roll/bun/stottie whatever you're having.

I make an exception for sardine paste IF I am also having cream cheese with it, lovely combination.

I even use butter underneath peanut butter.

And dont skimp on it either.

Disturbia81 · 07/07/2025 21:08

Yes to butter first

Nomorecoconutboosts · 07/07/2025 21:10

There was a paste called bloater paste as well Shock

yes, we had cheap marge then the paste.
like a pp we were skint
We had paste sandwiches, or cheap triangle cheese.
cheap value crisps, plain bag with a stripe and the flavour written on it.

Gowlett · 07/07/2025 21:10

I remember going to visit my aunty in Birmingham, and there being a little pot of Corned Beef in the cupboard. We loved it.

DeanStockwelll · 07/07/2025 21:13

Yep butter / marg thick beef paste with either very thin sliced onion or thin sliced pickles then grilled till hot enough to take the skin off the roof of your mouth

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 07/07/2025 21:15

I just had a little silent heave at the memory of paste sandwiches. I don't know if there'd have been marge on them, probably. I'm remembering the claggy greasiness, and it getting stuck to the roof of my mouth. Ugh.

MandarinsAreNotTheOnlyFruit · 07/07/2025 21:22

I still like a fish paste or crab paste sandwich. There's something very Miss Marple about them.

DontMowMyMeadow · 07/07/2025 21:23

Sliced white, marg, Shiphams fish paste.

Somehow, when reminiscing about my childhood, this frequent packed lunch abomination has never resurfaced.
