So are Gen Z into smoking fags?

Was at a family 60th on Saturday lots of people of all ages. I noticed that those in there late teens - 20's were always nipping in and out to smoke cigarettes. Older people (Boomer and Gen X) if they were smokers were vaping and most people in my age range Millennial to young gen z didn't seem to be smoking at all which tracks, as none of my friends my age are smokers or ever really smoked at all even when young. Mentioned this to a friend on Sunday who works at a college and she said she has noticed it as well a big uptick in young people smoking actual cigarettes and that it has been like that for a few years now. She said that smoking cigarettes is now cool and retro while vaping is what kids and older people do.

Anyone else noticed this?

None of my Gen Zs has ever smoked tobacco and nor have their school/uni friends. Apart from anything else cigarettes are expensive.

When they've used our garden cabin for parties etc, there's never been any sign or smell of tobacco.

@NetballHoop Interesting, I did notice this as well at another event last year (different side of the family) but it was a smaller number of young people there and so I thought perhaps this was a blip. But lots of young people at this party and a lot of fag smoking going on.

Blimey l thought that generation thought smoking and drinking were both really uncool. How depressing. I'd be gutted if my dd took up smoking

If you google Gen Z smoking there are quite a few articles detailing this trend. I wonder if it is because for that generation their parents don't smoke so to them it seems kind of cool and edgy, while for my generation it was something gross your parents did. I can imagine a situation due to the expense that people smoke at parties or at the weekend but not during the week of course that will change in those who get addicted!

I have a dd aged 21 (nearly 22) and neither she nor any of her friends smoke, at all, thank goodness. They all think it’s absolutely disgusting (and vaping too). They drink very little really too. Just a couple of glasses of wine before going out. Mainly because they say it’s too expensive and a waste of money! (These are all recent graduates, some in new well paid jobs, others trying to find work so maybe finance is a big factor)!

The last 3 people I've met under 25 at work who smoked weren't smoking tobacco ....

I commented on this last week that I think smoking is on the rise with the younger generation, was out in the city and noticed a lot of younger people smoking and it was cigarettes not anything else they were smoking.

I think you’re right. But I was roundly told off for calling ciggies, ‘fags’. No amount of protestation from me convinced her!

Personally, I love faggots and gravy, me.

YOU CANNOT SAY THAT!

I have noticed this too. DD has just finished at Oxford and I was there in the early 2000s. Not a single one of my friends smoked but most of hers do. She says it's mainly social and most of them don't smoke during the day.

I wonder if it's because they didn't watch their grandparents drown in their own lung fluid with emphasyma or hack themselves to death with COPD like my generation did (I'm 46). Just like vaccinations - we saw the horror of what mumps and measles could do so were straight down the clinic with our babies...

I would agree with this. I don't know anyone under 25 who smoke tobacco but I do know several in that age range who smoke weed. I would imagine that's much more common than normal cigarettes.

My twenty something cousins smoke. I’ve no idea how they afford it.
i never smoked, i was too tight, and fags we’re relatively cheap in my youth. Today they’re outrageous.

Youngsters have no idea what it was like when people smoked in pubs and clubs(and the cinema and on the bus), and how stinky your hair and clothes got after a night out.
