Do things go missing in your house without a trace?

I don’t mean losing it as in putting it down and forgetting where but stuff actually just disappearing? I had a picture in a frame in my living room, saw it the other day and it’s completely vanished now. It’s not as if it’s something that gets moved around. Has this happened to you?

Socks
my navy nightie
dh’s engraved 18ct cufflinks disappeared from their box. Various workmen were in the frame then he went through a box in his cupboard and remembered he’d put them there years ago.

No. The house is a bit messy but I know where everything is.

Except for my favourite little veg chopping knife that I had to hide frrom a self harming child and I've hidden it too well, approx 2 yrs ago. Annoys me every day.

I’d be very worried surely that the hiding place has been found?

Are you absolutely sure they’re not on the top of your head?

Treesarenotforeating · 04/07/2025 16:06

Good idea, but nope have searched everywhere

Nikki2017 · 04/07/2025 16:08

I lose my mind every day at around 3pm, then find it again at around 10pm

Parky04 · 04/07/2025 16:11

@Usernamenotavailable19 was the picture over a radiator by any chance, one of mine dropped off the wall and went behind the radiator and you can't see it, well and truly stuck🤦

Borrowers

MsNevermore · 04/07/2025 16:34

Yes!
I’ve had items of clothing disappear, hair ties, a folder of paperwork I know I brought with us when we moved.

I’ll probably find all of it when we start packing the house up for our next move around Christmas time 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

InjuryMyArse · 04/07/2025 16:37

I've spent the morning looking for a lovely soft cardigan that was a present. I can't find it anywhere and nobody would have borrowed it.

I was also looking for my spare glasses but found them in the car glove box yesterday.

Yes and I still haven’t learned not to put things in ‘a safe place’.
We have got a blow up mattress as we like sleeping outside under the tree when it’s really hot as our bedroom becomes unbearable in heat waves.
So we got the mattress out but there was no sign of the plug. We searched high and low but it was nowhere to be found.
Dh thinks I threw it away as apparently I do that with things that I don’t know what they are (eg if the plug wasn’t with the mattress I might not have known what it was).
We ended up sleeping on foam rubber which wasn’t nearly as comfortable.

My school dinner money (£3.10 and 10p school.fund, it was the eighties) in a brown envelope disappeared in the eighties. I remember sitting on the sofa throwing it up in the air and catching it, and nothing after that re its whereabouts. My mother still brings it up, and I totally didn't take it. If I had, I would have bought all the sweets from the newsagent, and that didn't happen. Very odd.

Occasionally things like one glass out of a set or a random mug will disappear without trace, but I know why that is. I have a clumsy butterfingers DH and he doesn't like admitting he's been careless yet again so he hides the smashed evidence and then feigns complete ignorance. He doesn't know I know, and in all other ways he's a good egg, so I haven't let on that I know he does it.

Random things that have totally disappeared over the years include:

One bright orange trainer sock.
A paring knife that I'd used pretty much daily for over 30 years and I MISS IT!
A playmobil soldier in a blue tunic.
One flip-flop.
Tinky Winky.
My Pandora bracelet with about 30 vintage charms on it (really hoping that turns up somewhere, I spent ages collecting them).

Utterlyconfusednow · 04/07/2025 17:06

Paring knife here too, they seem to like going walkabout.

JohnTheRevelator · 04/07/2025 17:24

Yep. About a year I used my extra strong nail clippers to cut my toe nails. I'm sure I put them back in the door pocket thing on my bedroom door, but they're not there. I've checked every single pocket, but nothing. Can't for the life of me think what's happened to them. They could be anywhere, they're so damn small. Meanwhile,I've bought a new pair, thought that doing that would make the old ones reappear, but nothing so far.

Goatblu · 04/07/2025 18:18

Yes. A paring knife. It was the most used one from the set and it just disappeared a few weeks ago.

IvanaTinkles · 04/07/2025 18:28

The bloody iron. I hadn’t used it for about a year as only tend to iron clothes for smart occasions like weddings. The ironing board is still there, but the iron has completely disappeared. Have searched every cupboard & storage space in the house, and it’s really pissing me off!

Yep our marriage certificate and my passport are there. Got a copy of the certificate at least but I need to call the passport office. It’s expired but I can’t renew without cancelling it.

I found a marriage certificate in the printer it was being scanned for something lost for several years.

Sadly isn’t there. I needed both of them together when I voted so I think I put them somewhere after that. We have a drawer for documents though and I don’t know why I didn’t put them there. Checked behind and under the drawer too and nothing.
